Got back from France yesterday, my 10 days just seemed to fly past! It was great to be back, a bit weird, a lot of small things had changed, yet it kind of felt more or less the way I left it, and like I had never been away. As well as seeing the horses I had a chance to catch up with lots of people, make them jealous with my photos and stories from New Zealand and find out what they'd been up to with their horses... fortunately (and surprisingly!) I hadn't lost any of my French! The only sad thing was the absence of Vegas the golden retriever, who some of you may remember as he has featured so heavily in my photos over the years. Sadly about a month ago he was run over at the yard by the postman's van and died within minutes :( He was the most loveable of dogs and had such a wonderful character and zest for life. It was so strange him not being there.

But on a happier note - I got to see my babies for the first time since December 2015! :D:D Went to see Mouse first, who since the end of last year has been on loan to a riding school owned by a friend. Basically the owner says he is AMAZING  Apparently he's a rider favourite, and the parents love him, and the instructors think he's the bee's knees because they can use him for everyone. When I went to see him he was out in the field with the other small ponies on a short end-of-summer break, and as I expected there was no excitement on his part, he was just like "oh hi mum, yeah I missed you too, but I've got some eating to do" He humoured me briefly for a few selfies and did let me have cuddles if I sat on the hay so he could eat at the same time  It was just lovely to see him so happy and hear how popular he is with everybody. Plus he's lost weight from the regular work, his feet have toughened up and been able to stay unshod, and his sweet itch has improved so much he is actually able to go out without his rug in the middle of the day. They are happy to keep him for as long as I want, so although I'd love him with me he's going to stay put for now, it's doing him good to have a job!

Annie is still in her original loan home and also doing well. Again there was not much of a "reunion" at our reunion as she has never been one to show affection in the field, though she did at least lift her head and walk towards me which is more than can be said for Mouse :p Her loaner was using her for hacking and lessons and having a great time, but she's been unable to ride for most of this year after major surgery so Annie has just been hanging out with her buddies and babysitting the occasional foal. She was so relaxed and settled, which made me feel great because she used to be such a stress head!

Another thing that's changed is that the lovely Jam who I used to compete and taught me so much is now fully retired. He was starting to get slower in the ring and then he started refusing, which was taken as a sign he was starting to find jumping uncomfortable. Following that he was diagnosed with Cushings and a heart murmur and the decision was made to retire him completely. He's only 20 and still looks great but he's had a fairly tough life competing since he was 4 and my boss feel that it was time for him to have a quieter life. By coincidence, his bestest bestest buddy Picasso was getting worse with his shivers and stumbling in front so it seemed fitting that the boys should be retired together. So they are now out chilling and playing together in their own big field and seem to be ok with the concept!

Izzy seemed happy to have an excuse to take the odd morning or afternoon off to take me places! We went to the beach one afternoon and cantered about 10km, which I really felt the next day as I've been out of the saddle for about a month with back problems, probably should have warmed up my leg muscles a bit first

We went showjumping over the first weekend and I got to catch up with even more people. It got a bit exhausting telling everyone how amazing New Zealand is :p It was weird being there as a spectator and not a groom, I did try to help out but kept being told off because I was meant to be on holiday and the new groom was meant to be learning!

I got to see the beautiful Tigger in action for the first time, as she'd literally just been dragged in from the field as a 3 year old when I left. It was her first "grown up" show (Izzy had pulled her out of the 5 year old series because it got too high for the horse's confidence) and the courses were more technical than she was used to, but she did a great job and was so honest.

Virgil (8) and Amazon (7) had both come on in leaps and bounds since I left and were a joy to watch.

I also got to see this kiddo in action. The timid tiny 9 year old who broke in Mouse for me started competing amateurs this season and is now a supremely confident (but still rather small) 14 year old, here jumping her way to 2nd place in the 1.25m Grand Prix

Tricks the "flying donkey" jumped beautifully in the 1.25...

... but unfortunately there was a little miscommunication about the takeoff for a big oxer about half way round and this happened! She didn't fall off, but wasn't back in the saddle in time for the next jump and had to circle. The donkey of course managed to clear the oxer effortlessly despite the position of the rider :p

Pif and Paf the super Shetlands are now retired from driving and getting fat and fuzzy in the paddock. Their successors Rif and Raf were just getting started when I left, so it was nice to see the progress they've made. We took them to a local racetrack to do some endurance work and on the second Sunday they were competing in a little 2-phase so I went along to watch them in action. I also had a few sneaky rides on them during the week :p Never could control myself when it came to pony stealing!

And finally some other random photos from the yard (sorry for all the posts, can only add 10 pics!). These two, Emma and Elliott, came in from the field to start their 3 year old training. They were both yearlings when I left, they were two of the four foals that Annie used to babysit... all way bigger than her now though!

It looks like you had a wonderful time, I net it was a bit weird to ne there then also weird to leave again. I so nice to hear mouse and annie are so happy and loved.

What lovely pictures and stories. But I think it's a bit harsh to call that gorgeous grey a flying donkey - especially when he held on to his rider over that big oxer!

Mouse looks lighter in colour than I remember.
Bet it was weird to pop back and the days would fly by.
