Might be legal, but is it humane?

have no idea about dogs or collars, and it does look shocking at first, but tbh the 'points' are very rounded and the description says about them being rounded so as not to scuff the dogs hair/skin etc. maybe it's not as bad as it looks? perhaps it's just the halter version of headcollars?

Looks like something from medieval times! I am sure this would hurt the dog, no matter what they say. They say if unsure how to use it then consult a trainer. How many people will do that! It seems like a lethal piece of equipment in inexperienced hands and not something I would endorse if I was a dog trainer. I am surprised it has the Sprenger name to it.

Anyone who uses things like that is an idoit.

Train a dog properly and you wouldnt need crap like that.

Disgusting. :timebomb:

but is that not exactly what most people in the horsey world do? use gadgets and bits (or progressively harsher bits) instead of getting to the root of the problem and training the horse properly? i also dont like the collar, but what must dog owners who use this think of the vile things we can do to horses - the blue tongue video for example is horrific compared to the dog who is sitting seemingly happily in the photo.

just a different perspective :yellowcarded:

very true

I have to admit I have a collar for my dog that I hate with a passion BUT it saves her life, she wears it when ever she is off the lead out the confines of our property, I maybe have to activate it once every 6 months, I havent had her since a puppy but maybe I am an idiot that cant train her dog properly? it depends how you look at it, I like my dog alive and if using this collar twice a year keeps her that way so be it, I have seen worse used on horses, just not saying WE would personally use it, its a matter of perspective

I always think this with snaffles with the sort of nut cracker action they could be v painful in the wrong hands

I dont think the collar would hurt them until they pulled on the lead, thats when the prongs would stab as the dog pulls on the lead. If that makes sense?

Your right it does happen in the horsey world too unfortunatly.

Same goes for most animals i guess. Its a shame :(

None of my dogs ever wear collars, unless we are at the vets or in the town.......to my way of thinking this is an admission of failure on the owners part.

Any device for training is only as kind as the hands that hold it.

I looked at it and thought, so what.

I know that sounds flippant, but when you look at the bits on the market that we as horse lovers put into a delicate mouth, the various types of spurs and whips and gadgets can we really be shocked that the dog world has a collar like this?

I hate prong collars. They are hideous and unneccessary in my opinion.

I was shocked to watch Caesar Milan use them on Dog Whisperer

To be fair to Ceasar Milan, he has explained that he only uses what folk have been using before,....not that it is any kind of excuse. He does tend to just work with a plain slip lead for preference it seems.

I don't like collars, full stop. I use a collar the same way as I like to think a bit shoudl be used, for communication.....in the horse to ask him to go where I'd like and with a dog to tell other folk who his owner is in case he gets lost.

Firstly let me say I agree that this should not be available on ebay however....
There is nothing wrong with Prong collars only the hands that use them.
I work with dogs from rescues that have behavioural problems and use whatever I need to use to give that dog a chance at finding a home.
For instance I recently took on a German Shepard dog who was left entire until we got him at 4 years old. He had lived as a guard dog and had many behavioural issues. His owner took him to vets to be PTS but a no kill charity took him and asked if I would work with him.
As I said he had many problems but the one relating to this tread is that he had for the best part of 4 years been tied up and pulling on a chain. So needless to say this was one very strong dog. His protective instincts were so strong he needed something that would get his attention and respect. Cue prong collar....
I won't explain how I used it as I would never advise anyone to use one unless professionally trained. Just as I hate seeing people riding with spurs when they can't control their legs. But I will say the dog was never hurt or distressed.
However lets just say after 1 week that dog was walking perfectly and listening to commands and by the end of the 2nd week the collar was no longer needed and was changed to a flat collar.
He went on to do obedience and is very good.
Sorry for the ramble but people look at things like this and think they are cruel. Yes they can be if used incorrectly and if you need them for any length of time then you are using them incorrectly. I do agree though these collars should not be available to just anyone. Just as I believe that certain bits etc shouldn't be available to just anyone. But that's another rant.
xx

Oh on another forum people were slamtin c m I assume linked to this I wondered why as I've always followed the sereis n thought he was great ?

I opened that link and the picture made me feel sick to the stomach. I agree with haltys etc having 2 big boystrus dogs (not that they wear them, they wear half choker collars), and one that doesn't understand alot of things due to brain damage from his epilepsy (vets conclusion about why he's so thick!!) but Jesus Christ that's vile IMHO :frown:
