Okay I know this has been done before but thought I'd ask again!
What are your favourite horsey related chores?
What are your worst ones???
I'll go first.
I think my all time favourite is laying a new bed. It means that I've done the hard part, ie lifting all the poop and wet out - and I LOVE the smell of a fresh bale of shavings (Storm is on those now because I think it suits her better). Equally as lovely is a new bed of straw, I laid one for Chloe this morning and now the byre smells all lovely and clean-animally:)
My least least favourite I think is struggling up on to the muck heap with an overly full barrow:(why do muck heaps breed during the night and grow so that you can't get your barrow into them?!:rolleyes:o_O
I am sure there are lots more things that I do like and don't but those are my main ones.

Sweeping. I bloody love sweeping! Oh and tidying the muck heap. Those are the best things. But to be honest I pretty much like it all... I guess I wouldn't have been a groom for 13 years if I didn't!

Oh yes, wet and dark, definitely not good!!! I am looking forward to not having to hold a torch between my teeth for much longer! Next winter I'll aim to have the barn re wired!

I admit I quite enjoy harrowing the field on the garden tractor, but not when we get stuck.....

I enjoy the rare moments when Buddy's white socks and feathers are actually white.

I really hate trying to clean the yard, as it is covered in mud and muddy haylage which is very heavy to lift by hand

Best putting the hay out
Worst: picking up the recycled hay afterwards :D

I like brushing her feathers, which is a plus considering she has floofed them up just now.
Like clipping.

Dislike: pulling the ragwort

Mine aren't so much chores.
Weird one but I like strip grazing the field, so the horses dont waste grass. Love seeing that line between the fresh and eaten bit. I know its effort to move the fence but it's so satisfying knowing then aren't wasting grass.
Dont like the fact that depending on which field there in it can take ages to get them in to ride each day.
My most recent chore dislike has been lugging water to the field for the boys. Ive only been doing it 3 weeks whilst they've been in a particular bit of field which has no water supply but its put lots of pressure on my bad back filling buckets and pushing it on the wheelbarrow.

I didn't think ponies were capable of wasting grass.
I know mine hoovers up the hay that the others won't look at if stood on it.

Ours are wasteful, they ignore certain areas of grass, to me it can look good ! But obviously to them, not so tasty. I think ours are too well fed lol
They are great wasters of hayledge - Zi not so much but the two mares, Storm is the worst one.
 
I love everything I do for Raf, but when I'm helping out at the yard I could choose a load of 'worst' options lol. Anything times by a lot equals a chore to me. I like doing Raf's and Jack's nets, but when I have a pile of 20 to do my heart sinks. Mucking out and making a tidy bed for mine is satisfying, but for a lot of horses it starts to hurt my back and it gets annoying having to wheel the barrow backwards and forwards to the muck heap all the time. When I put Raf's rug on I feel as though I'm giving him a cuddle, but putting 10 heavy muddy rugs on impatient horses is not so much fun, and finding space to dry them all at the end of the day is no fun either! I really admire my YO and her assistant who do it day in day out. No wonder they're so fit.

Yes the trips to the muck heap are getting me down atm. We need to get it shifted (again) and then it does make life easier. Lol ten horses - oh heck! That is too much!! Three is bad enough. I like the satisfaction of seeing a nice tidy bed but I am not sure if any of mine share that feeling.....
Zi is the tidiest of the bunch, he keeps a clean house all by himself!!! Nice neat little rows of poop if he stays in over night which isn't often. No food dragged into his bed either. Not like those mares.....:eek:
 
If you have a lot though you set it up for ease of use surely?
We had a tractor with a tipper thing so you didn't take the wheelbarrows back and forth, you simply forked into the tipper thing. Someone then drove that away.

You see I hated that system, we had one on a yard we were on. And when it got full.....YO was meant to take it away but often it was spilling out all over the place. Plus they do take quite a bit of room up. In an ideal world we'd have a James Bond style ejector button - floor would open up (when horses turned out of course) and swallow up all the crap. Which you'd have previously moved into the centre - leaving good bedding at the sides. Hehehehe now that would be a satisfying task........:D

Argh, wet muddy hayledge is the pits!!! I have developed grand upper arm strength and muscle......:rolleyes:

I think in Germany they have a conveyor belt at the back and you simply push stuff on.
I am sure I didn't imagine that.

Course the modern horse should just poop once a day in one go.

Mine pooped on a hack and I reckon she had saved it up! I cannot believe how much one little bottom can create.
I swear it needed planning permission it was THAT big.
