What are your top 3 tips for a first time pony owner??

I hope everything goes well in the morning, getting a new horse is a strange combination of being excited and scared silly.

That's the clip I like in mine. Not too much off, but enough to stop the excess sweating.
I also think it makes them look slimmer.

Welcome to the forum. One thing you can guarantee is I will write something at some point that's funny.

Good luck hope everything goes well just a word of warning clips can make a horse very fresh and that combination with a new home, new people and getting clipped could set a horse crazy . Personally I would not clip until you now the horse . my horse gets the exact same clip and is always very fresh after it .

Thanks for good luck wishes everyone. So far so good. He unloaded easily, walked out into the stable and proceeded to happily munch on his hay net Obviously I've spent my whole afternoon just gazing at him! Hes been drinking happily, met his new pony neighbours in the stalls next door (a shetland and a new forest) and was calm enough to let us give him a little brush. I haven't put him on the field yet as farmer told us last minute that we need to add a little extra fencing- late night for OH on the cards!

I'm planning to go back to check on him in a couple of hours and again tonight!

Thanks for the advice re clipping @Lexi 123. He's not been bad at the minute but could well be a different story when hes out of the stable. Will make a judgement call tomorrow about whether to pop a bridle on and take him out for a walk in hand x

Don't worry about the clip, the chances are that it wont cause any problem particularly with how mild the weather is. It all sounds promising so far, if their the sort to get wound up and silly you'd have seen it by now, instead he sounds like he's settling in nicely :)

A tip - if your OH gets the fencing sorted provide beer and a decent dinner, you need to keep him sweet at this stage!

Already sorted the dinner part! Beer later. I could definitely do with one myself x

Don’t be in a hurry to ride . Get to know each other on the ground first . If you getting on his back it will alway be better if he likes you lol. You won’t know that until you spent some time showing him he can trust you . It’s only once he trusts you that you can then in turn trust him x

Yup - a little bit of leading out is a good indicator of where their head is at, after all the kerfuffle of a move to their new home. I got so into walking Hogan out, my friend had to give me a kick to get me on him!

How many photos did you take? I took tons of Hogan, the day he arrived! My OH glazed over at pic 54! Glad it's gone so well - enjoy!

So looking forward to leading him out tomorrow, I absolutely want to get him used to his new surroundings and check his reactions to things. Just been back to his stable for a snuggle - I bet hes sick of the sight of me already!

Yes @Huggy, impossible not to take pics! Including this of him with his co-owner my 6 year old daughter. She adores him already. Cant wait to see him running about on the field tomorrow now fencing is done. I'll happily take an early start for that xx20200125_145652.jpg

I clipped mine and hacked her straight out. I don't think she registered until I turned her out and then she had a good yeehaw I'm bald moment. She's not rugged.

I did once clip and ride straight after. Id not do it again. Horse wasnt excited because i clipped him. He was miffed and grumpy for having to be a model and stand in the yard for so long. He just wanted to go back to his field.
If i clip and want to ride same day i will turn out for some grass in between.

Riding the next day clipped is not an issue for mine.

No experience as every time I am about to buy a horse, something else crops up and I am persuaded to share instead.

But my three priorities were to have a vet, farrier and saddler all lined up.If you ride on a good yard or have good livery, the YO probably has all three.

Here he is enjoying his field - naughty boy has snapped some cable ties today when ribbing gis bum on some fencing

All going ok so far, I've got myself into a good little routine mucking out stable before work... I'll be shattered come Friday!

Just some teething issues with when to rug and which weight etc. He came with rain scold so he needs at least a sheet. Keeping his bum covered when out has kept it at bay on his rear end but its flaring up on his neck which is uncovered. Still a mild case but I think I will get a rain sheet with neck piece so hes protected but not too warm. X
