Just curious - has anyone trained their horse to do it? I know it can be done because I remember @KP nut saying that all the horses at a stables she used to go to (in Hong Kong?) performed like that.

It would have been a really useful trick today at the farrier’s when it was obvious Raf needed a wee but he was shoeless and I couldn’t take him outside. Of course show him the bucket and he immediately retracted everything and all but pursed his lips.

I have part trained him to go on command but only outside on grass. I didn’t teach him on purpose, but by leading him slowly up and down and asking if he needs a wee before we set off on a journey (well I am a mum lol) and he seems to have cottoned on to the idea of what’s expected, so I think a bucket is possible if only I can get him over his bucket aversion. I sometimes catch a wee in the stable in a bucket but he doesn’t really enjoy it :p

Aw bless, you are a mum lol that's so funny asking him if he needs a wee:D:D
I honestly think Storm would just give me a right old mare stare if I presented her with a bucket - lol she just assumes buckets ( no matter what size) contain grub!

I learnt to ride on ex race horses in Hong Kong who lived upstairs above the arena. They all wee-ed on a whistle command into a bucket. They were on rubber mats. Until I moved to England as an adult I had no concept of mucking out. I honestly thought all horses did that and when I bought my first pony in my twenties I stood in his stable whistling - bucket at the ready - wondering why nothing was happening!

I suppose you could show him what you meant. :D
Try putting something in it. People sometimes forget to add straw or shavings, so it sounds different and might splash.

I was going to say put straw or shavings in it to make noise more normal and avoid splash.
Didn't mean to post twice it wouldn't load.

When ever I get off after a ride ginger pees. Everyone in my barn knows that and a bucket is left outside my stable to catch the pee.

He pees quite happily in the bucket I keep meaning to whistle at the same time to teach him but as he does it every time I get off it seems pointless

Very good point about the straw/shavings, I suppose I could keep a bucket with a sawdust lining outside the stable, but I rarely catch him weeing in the stable, whereas you can guarantee it's the first thing Jack does when he comes in. Maybe I should take the bucket to the field so when I catch him and ask if he needs a wee I can shove the bucket under when he starts. I'm not sure I'm brave enough for the funny looks and comments though :p

Just remember to put the bucket in the right place.
Changing from a gelding to a mare, I once out a bucket under her and obviously missed big time.
How is your stable set up, with a we patch offering?
Mine generally waits until she's turned back out to go through all four things.
