Hank ran himself a bit ragged over winter playing and rough housing with Niko, Hank was incessant! he wasn’t worryingly skinny but he certainly wasn’t carrying much extra despite getting fed double what he normally gets.
This is from June when they’d not long arrived to their summer grazing, boy was he hanging on to that coat!

And look at him this morning

Dr green really did wonders for him!

As long as you aren't dealing with a metabolic type or fatty then nothing beats grass. He looks like a different pony!

Shetland on grass and needing feed, feels wrong, but it really has been great for him. They're (Hank and Niko) on grass in the day now and on ratty grass and the round bale at night.

Is some of it rubbed out, or just lying on the wrong side? I had to shorten Luka's when I got I'm to make the rubbed out area less noticeable and I was only looking at it yesterday and thinking the longer bits need trimming back again - I couldn't bear to take it too short though.

When I first saw him he had virtually no mane, all rubbed out apparently from eating through fences 🤷‍♀️ so when he arrived I trimmed it all really short and it was nice for a while but he also has really fine hair and its gone thin and ratty now it's longer, so another trim is in order I think. I like a long natural mane but I think it will just have to stay short until it thickens up a bit.

Maybe he's just not folically gifted. Ziggy's mane was always thin and I think Sid will be the same, but Mattie has a beautiful Arab mane, longer than his neck is thick all the way down (though he does have a weedy old horse neck).

His tail is lovely and think, so I'm just hoping the mane needs a bit of TLC to get it better, it still feels like soft baby mane at the moment.

I got monkeys mane shortened up yesterday, he wasn’t very impressed lol02569B88-BC3D-4999-90D0-C80969B46D5F.jpeg
Not the best job but hopefully it will help it not to tangle/pull out so it thickens up a bit.

You're actually really lucky - he's one that will suit lots of mane, very little or even none. I had to hog Ramsey one year and he looked awful - just didn't have the neck for it.

He is certainly giving you the evil eye there. There's a great South African (afrikaans) phrase my husband uses - "checking you/it skeef" meaning giving you a funny or pointed look, looking at something suspiciously or unhappily..
