2022 Hacking and Riding

I went to ride as usual, and we had the vet coming at 9.30. Something wasn't right with Hogan. When i arrived he just stood and looked at me, no usual starving cob stomping at the gate. I went in to get him, and he was very lacklustre - he's normally desperate to get in to his haynet. Just picked at it, but drank his bucket dry. I tacked up anyway, thinking if he's colicky, best thing is to keep moving. The ride to the forest gate was excrutiatingly slow, with many, many stops, so I just came back. I listened to his tummy, which seemed ok, and gave him his bucket, which he ate, but without his usual gusto. The vet checked him over, tummy, temperature, heart etc. and said all seemed well. I checked him at lunchtime and he seemed more himself, and by this evening back to his cheeky self. Will keep an eye on him, and vet said to call if I noticed anything again.
Aw that sounded most un hogan! Hope he’s okay and it was just something and nothing.

Back to normal - we went out this morning, slowcoach as per, then, again, for no reason a tantrum out of nowhere. Naughty boy just snorted, bucked and head tossed all the way round. The mood continued in the paddock, as can be seen by the posture below. Looking at nothing.Screenshot_20220129-160431_Gallery.jpg

Ive only just caught up on this thread. Sorry to hear Hogan had an off day. Hope he has got over what ever it was.
Chunky was like that a couple of weeks ago. He refused his food the one day. Hes been fine since.

Im having a duvet day. Sort of. Ive went out and did some of the animals this morning but spent the afternoon asleep on the sofa. Just been out to feed the horses, feed the ewes and walk Floss and im now already tucked up in bed. Had two early nights in the week too. Ive got the dreaded lurgy. No idea if its covid as ive got no testing kits. I have spent most of January bringing up yellow gunge. The last few days im now sneezing and snotting. Im starting to feel drained now.

The boys are having the weekend off. Stopped the girl coming to ride Chunky this weekend. I havent walked them out all week. Will just have to deal with Billys tantrums when i feel better. I could tell tonight he is bored. He was very quick and i found myself putting the food bowl down and getting out the way pdq. Normally hed be told to get some manners and not run over me but im in no fit state to argue today.

Strange, these off days they have, isn't it? I had what you had a few weeks ago, tested negative. That's the thing now - anything with cold or cough symptoms makes us wonder - covid? where before we would just accept we were full of cold. I sympathise though, it knocks you right down. Hope you feel better soon.

Sorry you are under the weather Chunky Monkey. Keep warm and I hope you feel better soon.

Aaahhhhh. After more joint injections and a reminder about his attitude and behaviour I had a lovely polite horse for a short hack today. Through the hay field and round back the track and drive. I was quite careful to keep him between hand and leg but he couldn’t have been lovelier to ride today. A couple of spooks but actually at proper spook things and without then throwing the toys out.

Had our first proper canter today, ie not cheating by sending him up a steep hill. It wasn't planned, and given how bright he was feeling I'm not sure why I even asked, but it was a nice wide flat grass section of byway and it just felt right so we did. Good as gold - just as well since I was on my own - and came back to trot when asked. Lord that canter is high stepping on the flat, to the degree that out hacking I'll normally canter in a xc position but his gait and carriage actually make that harder than sitting in a light seat! The one thing wrong with that ride is unless you want to be out for hours you have to turn round on yourself, and coming home he turned into a very hot plunging cob until we eventually got back to tarmac 🤣

Remind me what a canter is again?

Nice and mild today, so not too difficult to haul out of bed and get up to the yard! Schizo Hogan behaved very well, if a bit slow (as per!) Really enjoyed it - even when the local little Shetland that hangs with the forest ponies suddenly appeared from nowhere! Ramsey never got used to the Shetlands, but aside from a glance toward it, Hogan wasn't fazed.Screenshot_20220201-104927_Gallery.jpg

On Friday Harvey's halo slipped badly. We hacked out on our own and met a parked yellow lorry which he didn't want to pass. Then a squirrel in a tree which he didn't want to pass. A road was closed so rather than coming straight home we had to turn off - Harvey made it very clear than he wasn't very happy with this and after a couple of hundred meters he turned and ran for home. We went through a T junction, up the bank the other side like a wall of death then 500m down the land to the main road. I managed to steer him along the main road rather than out in front of the cars at which point I finally managed to stop him. He then behaved for the rest of the way home, but managed to stand on my foot while I was untacking him. Not a popular pony!

Saturday was an SJ clinic. The traffic was awful and we missed the start (It took 1:25 to get there instead of the normal hour), but he did at least go well for me.

Sunday was a repeat of Friday's ride in company to make the point that he has to turn away from home when asked. He was of course like a donkey!

You both made the jumping look easy! But omg to the hack - wonder what had got into him?! Bad Harvey!!!!!

That doesn't sound like a fun hack at all @GaryB , I'm relieved you both got back safely and hope your foot isn't too sore now,

Best horse ever. Thankfully we have managed to nip in the bud the behaviour that was not acceptable. We had a super lovely ride today. I asked for a teeny tiny trot to report back to the vet. Being a sjer in a previous life, there is no need to trot when you can canter, specially when slightly up hill. But it was polite rather than the “I’m going to die” type. He was very keen and very happy but only spooked ONCE in the whole ride 😂. It’s nice to have him back. He also powered down the hill that I had used as the diagnosis that he was a bit stiff down. No hesitation and no change in stride and it’s relatively steep. Phew.

Hardly a pony @GaryB. That had to flippin' hurt.

Blame me. I'm sure I've jinxed you. I was thinking a few weeks ago, that a little while back you were finding him a bit much and considering parting ways. Your recent reports have suggested you've been getting along pretty well and much happier. Clearly I must not think about these things.

I'm pretty sure it was because he wanted to go straight home but who knows with a horse! I normally ride with his curb (kerb??) chain loose so for the next few solo hacks it will be a bit tighter! He has generally been ok since a change of bit (to a pelham) and adding a martingale
