A question from my dad... :D

Just watching a lucinda green masterclass on horse and country, which he switched on himself without asking me. He seems to like watching this stuff. Anyway he asked me something and I had no idea!! WHY are the arena letters the ones they are, and why are they positioned in that order? He can't understand why its not just A,B,C. And neither can I now I think about it!
