Does anyone ever wonder with old style movies like westerns did they train all the actrors to ride or would they have used loads of stunt doubles ?

Good question! I would assume that for the actors who regularly appeared in westerns, being able to ride was more or less a prerequisite for employment - if only because with the lack of special effects etc, it would have been very obvious to an audience if the actor wasn't doing their own riding. But for background scenes and fighting etc I guess they would probably use stunt riders rather than having to train people up!
