Has anyone used a off the shelf or internet based allergy testing service?

There are several, blood, hair etc... just wondered if anyone has any expertise on this:biggrin:

No, didn't realise you could get something like this. Years ago OH was allergy tested at the hospital - it said he was NOT allergic to cats. Humph. The one time he stayed at my brothers house with their cats he ended up being hospitalised as his lung collapsed! So not sure how reliable that was....

I remember years ago when I worked in London having awful itchy shins. So much so that my very lovely but very temperamental boss sent me privately (bless him) to have it investigated.

The upshot was that anything could cause it. The paint on glossed doorways, a carpet ............. you get the gist.

Actually what was my issue was the very high shine lycra glossy tights that we girls wore with our mega high heels and short skirts!!! And I wore them every day. Even now, wearing glossy lycra tights for just an evening (under obviously a much longer skirt now I am older!!), has the same effect.

Personally, I think you should start with narrowing down your allergy. Is it breathing or skin. And narrow it down further on that basis, and try removing the things that you use or do every day. And then have the tests.

Yeah its not for me, hubbys specialist wants him to do one so just looking at options for him.

It looks like they are all very subjective:unsure:

I think they are, and I think narrowing it down yourselves would be helpful before he actually pays to have a diagnosis.

Not off the shelf as such, but many years ago we had one son tested via hair samples as he was extremely hyper active and seemed to exist on very little sleep. Well it came back as quite a few allergies to everyday things, such as tomatoes, certain food colourings and flavourings, potatoes and blackcurrants being some of the ones that stick in my mind. I did then readjust his diet and there was some improvement, but I still remained rather sceptical that he just might be growing out of his hyper activity and not sleeping.

However many, many years on he was tested at the hospital to allergies as part of a very intensive and wide ranging investigation to pin down what eventually turned out to be a Bi-Polar problem. But, here is the interesting bit, they did find that he was in fact allergic to all of the things (and a few more) that the hair test had highlighted in his early childhood. So I actually think that some of them probably are quite accurate.

There is a hair sample one, which I liked the look of, just its based in europe and I was a little unsure if it was a scam.... will have to do more research..
