Anyone with concerns over t mental Health issues

What did he do?
I didn't know you could be sent to prison at 16, thought it was young offenders until 18? Not that either of them would be suitable for a boy with his problems.

What were the offences Wally? It doesn't say what he did to get the sentence? Or why he was moved to Shetland?

I don't know about Shetland rules/laws, but in the UK we have something called the Mental Health Diversion Panel which means that anyone caught up in the criminal justice system, where it is believed that their mental health influenced them offending, then they are referred to the specialist multi agency team in order to identify if there are more appropriate punishments/rehabilitation/therapies which are then recommended to the courts

He got into bad company on the internet and he was persuaded to commit "death by cop" ie go out and get himself shot by a policeman.

He's not a bad lad, he's friendly and polite but he is autistic and it's very noticeable. He's very impressionable and easily lead. I am not sure where on a scale he'd be put but he needs a lot of support and has additional support needs.

Anyway, all he had to commit death by cop was his dad's air gun, (and it was totally obvious it was an air gun) and the Shetland police force.
Being autistic he got in a right state ran off with somoene's boat and ended up in Scalloway with the airgun and went on a bit of a commando style yomp through the hills and ended up in Lerwick, in "Nob Hill" where the posh folk live, and by this time was very upset and in his heightened state pointed the gun at folk in their back gardens. The police got called , then they called an armed response unit from Inverness in a flippin' helicopter when all it needed was for someone to call a carer to come and calm him down.

Anyway they sent him straight to the young offenders institute, where he's been ever since, and likely to stay for 3 years. Not the place for an autistic lad who had a bit of a crisis with his condition. Sending the disabled to prison stinks. He's not likely to do it again, he's no danger, he's just a vulnerable young kid.

That's very sad and I agree - he needs proper care and help. Not like he's some nowty little git robbing old ladies or stealing. How truly awful that those folk on the internet exist. Just terrible. Always amazes me that such nasty people exist.

Poor lad, it makes me so sad that in this day and age something like this could happen. Makes me angry too that mindless morons see talking him into doing what he did as 'fun' poor kid. Signed and lets hope something good comes from it for him.
