Laminitis rings are signs of a past change in diet, not a sign of a current attack. They can occur without laminitis & laminitis can occur without them showing later.

I'm glad he's looking better now, and hope it continues.

Thanks for all your helpful replies. They gave me lots of hints & tips that I can follow-up. Some replies were actually more helpful & informative than my vet. Am currently taking one day at a time with my pony. Fingers crossed.
