In 1981 my mother purchased a registered pinto, (he was actually 1/2 quarter horse (dam) and 1/4 Arab, 1/4 pinto (sire) who was all white with the following exceptions: 2/3 black & 1/3white tail (white at the dock, black on bottom), bay over head, color not meeting on chin, white muzzle, very tiny star, white mane with black mane over crest (forehead). Am I correct to assume he was a skewbald tobiano with his major color being white (basically his entire body except his head)? There were absolutely no brown, black, or any other color markings on his body. I believe white was dominant because of the Arab. Any help is appreciated. His stock was Poco Rag Doll (dam) and Ibn Wittez something or other (sire).

Chev posted some very detailed descriptions in this section to help people figure out what colour their horse is :) it would be worth reading those.

Yes. I read her descriptions but none of them say what a pinto/paint is with the majority of white. They all say if there are certain areas of white across the withers, on the legs, etc., with a colored base like bay, roan, chestnut, black. Or colors are in a vertical, round, or spotted pattern. None of these descriptions fit my pinto. Basically, all white, some black on tail, some brown on head. I'm perplexed. Thanks for the tips tho.

Do you have a picture? all the colour patterns apply to paints, it sounds like he's just loudly marked but which of the genes doing it would be more easily identified from a picture rather than a description :)

@doggiedoter
Have you had a look at the Equine Tapestry? Just google search it, you might find the overo section useful :)
It's a blog all about colours of horses...
To me, I'd lean towards a loud Overo with another possible White pattern...
I'd need to see photos of the horse to know for sure, but that's what it sounds like [the picture I've painted in my head according to your description above]

I think he sounds like a loudly marked tobiano with something like splash white at work too. I have seen loudly marked tobiano/splash horses whose only 'colour' was on their ears and poll. These horses are known as Medicine Hat tobianos. Did your boy have blue eyes?
