:confused:I'm thinking of buying Tess a new numnah, as her current one is rubbing, and i have always wanted to get a sheepskin numnaH. I cant afford a real sheepwool one and as i was looking for faux ones, when i came across something that said that they can be harmful/bad for horses, and only lambs wool should be worn! Is this true?

Any other oppinoins(s/p?) are welcome, plus any recomondation on cheap ones would be great.

Thankks:D x

The thing with faux wool is that it is thick and so likely to be heating - real sheepskin is of course thick but it also wicks away moisture and is breathable - its a natural product, and as such doesn't heat in the same way. Heat build up can become dangerous if too much as it makes soft tissue such as muscle and/or ligaments etc more likely to become damaged, or break down.

The other thing with any thick numnah is that unless you have a treeless saddle, your saddle needs to be fitted to a width appropriate to allow for the thickness of the pad - else you in effect narrow the tree on a saddle which is the correct fit with only a thin or no cloth, which will do more harm than good.

By all means use a faux sheepskin pad, but make sure you saddle fits with it, and just keep an eye on rubbing and/or excessive heat build up - if it occurs, stop using the faux sheepskin =]

Sheepskin is best at taking away the sweat and as it's a natural fibre it doesn't make them sweat more either.

I have a black with white sheepskin Numed numnah (sheepskin for the half pad part and then ordinary quilted numnah at the bottom - which keeps the close contact rather than full sheepskin)

It's only been used about a dozen times as I changed saddles to a treeless so needed specialist pads. I am going to whack it on e-bay but if you want more details pm me, it might save you some cash. :)

Have a look on Equestrian Clearance. I picked up a lovely Roma half merino wool lined saddle cloth there a few months ago for less than £20

I use both; real sheepskin numnah, acrylic sheepskin girth sleeve. Neither cause any problems - and I prefer the acrylic girth liner as it's easy to wash and stays soft.

If you crave a real sheepskin then have a look on ebay, as they do come up there from time to time.

no point in fake sheepskin, you aren't getting any of the benificial properties of a fantastic natural fibre. real sheepskin doesn't have to cost the earth, weatherbeeta has one of their blue cross sales on just now so a half lined merino sheepskin numnah is down to about £22 just now.

You can get the ones that are WOOL fake sheepskin and they are fine, just the acrylic ones that aren't. I have a wool one and it's fab, wicks the sweat away and my girl thinks it's super comfy!
