I hope to have a new horse very soon and just wondered what people have in their first aid kits and what alternatives do they have to the expensive horse treatments??

Also i see a lot of people refering to pig oil and sulpher?? what is this?? Is Zinc & Castor oil the same??

I was thinking along the lines of having:

bandages
gauze
animalintex
hibiscrub
savlon spray
germoline
cotton wool....

I cant really think what else i would need....

Suggestions appreciated!! :D

I have bandages,
sudocreme,
baby wipes,
germaloids

and that's about it but there is a tack shop on my yard which sells everything else (I found that everything gets a bit grotty if it's lying in your tack box for a while)

Pig oil and sulphur is only really needed if you horse has mud fever so I wouldnt' say you need that as an essential item.

I also have...

Cheap vetwrap type bandages
normal bandages (from boots/superdrug)
Wound powder
Melolin (from boots/superdrug)
Big roll of cotton wool -to use instead of gamgee
Scissors
Electric tape (from hardware store) Keeps bandages in place
Strong plastic bags and duck tape (in case I need to do a hoof poltice)
^^^ I cut up a blow up chair, I didn't need any more, and it's been a brilliant poltice boot!

If I think of any more I'll let you know!!

I have

Animalintex
Wound Powder or Spray
Hibiscrub
Bute
Antihistimines
ACP or Sedalin
Vet wrap
Normal bandages
Disposable nappies
Cotton Wool
Duct tape
Gamgee
Hydrogen Peroxide
Epsom Salts
Ordinary Salt
Rescue Remedy
Pig oil and Sulphur

Places like Robinsons do little starter packs but I'm not sure if it is cheaper to buy seperately

I've got pretty much the same as everyone else - my advice would be to buy the little items eg cotton wool etc from the supermarket as much cheaper

Would also recommend paracetamol for yourself and some of the soapless handwash stuff (the sort you just rub into your hands) as figure it's no piont trying to clean a wound with dirty hands!

I got a small horsey first aid kit from the local tack shop, with animalintex, vetwrap etc in it.... plus a big pot of sudocreme, some purple spray and an antibacterial wash.

On top of that I now also have pig oil & sulphur, and Miltons but they're more maintenance than first aid.

eta: Pig Oil & sulphur is a liquid gloop used to treat mud fever or mites, and to condition the feathers - you rub it into the legs from the knees down, approx every 6 weeks. Also works wonders on dry old ergots and itchy tails!
