When I last hacked out with a group at my RS it was the same cost as an hourly lesson
I noticed today on the RS website that it was £25, £10 more than a lesson
Is this normal?

I think it is normal for a hack to be more expensive, when i used to ride at a RS i used to pay £25 for an hours private or £30 for a hack.
Not sure why, especially if you have a 'group' hack, would think it would be cheaper rather than dearer

I dont think they should charge you more, surely they charge for the usage of the horse. Although, thinking about it, maybe that horse could not do as much work that day after going out on ahack for a hour and so maybe they put the price up to compenstae. However, that does not excuse them charging you two different rates for the same activity. Maybe they charged you wrong the first time and maybe therefore you should not ay anythinh in case they want you to pay the difference :)

Where I used to ride it was a little cheaper than a group lesson.
Lesson prices varied accordingly to the level of the instructor so it made sense as a hack only needed an escort.

It may be due to higher insurance. The trekking centre near us could get insurance for lessons, but actually closed when their main business of hacks to the beach could not be insured. Insurance companies refused to cover beach rides.

all the schools i know of have cheaper hacking than lessons because they dont have the added cost of an instructor/lights etc. my riding school is £13 half hour lesson and £7 half hour hack x

We don't do hacking because of the roads around us but if we did I would have to charge more.

Our insurance (in common with most RS I suspect) insists any hacks are accompanied by a qualified and nominated instructor/escort with extra escorts for more than 4 riders. Each of those not only needs paying but needs to ride a horse which reduces the hours that it can be earning.

I worked it out at 1 instructor plus six horses for a lesson v 1 instructor plus escort plus 8 horse for the same people to hack.

I charge £20 each for an hours group lesson so would have to charge about £28 per person for a hack for the same group.

Our insurance is reduced as well because we don't hack so I suspect that is also factored in at schools where they do.

I used to pay £26 for a half hour private lesson, and £25 for an hours hack. So hacking was much better value, and if they had 4 clients hacking, they made a decent sum. Mostly, however, it was just me and the instructor!
