My cat was hit by a car last night. The vet mentioned amputation there and then as he has a very obvious nasty break on one of his back legs.

Thank god there are some lovely people out there. Apparently the bloke driving the car stopped. Him and the bloke in the house opposite tried to find Ceefa (it was nearly dark) who enevitibly ran off. When they could the bloke started knocking on doors to try and find the cat and then knocked on mine because he heard we had 3 cats. He then came with me whilst I went round all the immediately local gardens trying to find him before we both had to give up as I had a housefull of 8 year old girls round for a sleepover and there was nobody else home. In the end Ceefa decided not to try and be brave and started crying which is how my hubby found him.

All the effort these 2 blokes went to makes me feel extremely grateful. When my father-in-law had a fall, landing on his face and requiring many stitches, people actually crossed the road and ignored him despite him calling to the for help and according to the man who did help him :banghead: so for this much effort to happen for 'only' a cat is tremendous.

If he hadn't come then we wouldn't have been so keen to find Ceefa and been able to save him a lot of pain and probably death given the conditions of him and the weather last night. I'm just killing time until I can call the vets to find out how he went through the night. They'll hopefully have stabilised him and if so he'll be knocked out for xrays today.

Figers crossed for my little man

Healing vibes for Ceefa.

Cats are so tough - we have a 3 legged one that vet thinks was probably hit by a car. He made it home and we found him cowering in a corner. His pelvis was broken too, so the vet made the decision to remove the badly broken back leg, which allowed the pelvis to heal. He had to live in a cage for 6 weeks and have loads of tablets, but after that he was fine and he runs about as normal now, he just can't jump as well as he could. In-laws had a similar thing with one of their cats but they saved the leg - it was pinned so again the cat had to live in a cage for a few weeks. That bits really sad because they look really sorry for themselves in the cage.

Anyway, hope you have some good news from the vets this morning. How kind of those men to go to al that trouble to try and find Ceefa (C for cat, just got it!) I bet there isn't one in a hundred who'd stop after they'd hit one. Fingers crossed he's ok.

big hugs for you & healing vibes/strokes for ceefa. really pleased that they took the time & effort to knock on doors and to help look for him. It restores your faith in humanity.

Praying that ceefa is ok today ...

Just spoken to the vet. Ceefa came through the night ok. Vet didn't seem at all worried last night that Ceefa would die or anything but you don't know if he was just being chilled for your benefit so of course I was fearing the worst.

They are just completing the ward rounds now and then they'll knock him out and xray him to see what needs to be done.

You could see last night that there was a clean break across everything fairly close to his hock (is it called a hock in cats too?) hense I suppose the mention of amputation being an option. We'll just have to see what happens. He's a healthy 2 year old in prime condition so he's got the best chance of any cat of getting through all this.

Healing vibes for the Ceefa cat. Impressed by the guys coming to look for the cat/cat owners...restores your faith in humankind a bit.

Poor Ceefa - healing vibes winging there way down from Scotland. Am very pleased that the guys stopped and helped as a lot of people prob wouldnt.

Fingers crossed it all goes well for him today.

Thanks everyone. I've just been along to thank the lady who's garden he was found in. She looked round again after I looked but Ceefa must have been in shock at that stage and kept his gob shut!

I've tried knocking twice for the bloke across the road who helped me. He'll be getting a thank you card and a bottle of wine because I have no doubt in my mind that if he hadn't got involved then Ceefa would be dead now.

Thank God for kind people.

Get well soon Ceefa !
If it's any consolation to you, one of my (then) kittens managed to have a V shaped fracture on her thigh bone (we think she fell out of a tree). We tried to bandage her leg on a support but went back to the vets 3 days later to remove it as she was very unhappy with it on. Kept in the house for 2 weeks, she healed by herself and is now completely fine.

Vet was also telling me of a case where he'd gone onto a farm to put a plaster cast on a calf. One of the farm cats had clearly broken it's leg so vet asks farmer to get cat and he'll plaster it at the same time. Farmer replied certainly not to but to leave him be. When the vet returned to remove plaster cast from calf, he saw the cat run past as if nothing had happened.

Cats are tough, lots of healing vibes too

Vet just called again. Xrays show it's just this fractured leg to deal with and couldn't see any other hidden nasties which is a blessing and we can continue as planned last night which is to get him to a specialist.

She's refering him to a specialist in Ringwood and will call me back when she has an appointment time and I'll take him up there. From that we'll get an idea of whether the leg is savable and make a decision on what's in his best interests. It appears that the blood supply is healthy but they'll look more closely at that and any potential nerve damage.

Fingers crossed for my little man.

I've just seen this, poor little cat.

If it's in Ringwood, then I think I know the specialist. One of my dogs years ago was referred to them and they were fabulous, you'd never know the difference now in him at 10 when most of his breed are showing signs of arthritis, he's still as sprightly as a 2 year old.

That is really heartwarming to hear people went looking for him, glad you found him sooner than later.

Fingers crossed for him, he's no doubt in great hands :)

Fingers crossed for Ceefa, sounds like he's a fighter and will soon be on the mend :)

It restores your faith in human nature a little hearing stories like this. My neighbour had 3 cats hit by cars and no-one ever stopped to help them :(

Fingers crossed for Ceefa, I'm awaiting news of my sick moggy, who is STILL not at the vets:devil: They've just rang me, were supposed to shut at one and are hanging on for my friend to get him there..

I'm back. The little man is having an op on Monday and isn't in pain but has a huge great heavy cast on his leg. Luckilly he is the most laid back of all the cats we've ever had (which is loads!) so he is coping well. Hopefully we'll be able to bring him home on Tuesday.

The break is too near to the joint to be able to pin plus is on a diagonal not a clean lateral break and the bones have pushed up so they are lying next the the rest of the leg. It looked last night like the break was near the hock when in fact the xrays show is is near the ankle and the whole lot has shifted upwards causing a lot of soft tissue damage.

This specialist has pioneered surgery whereby they fix an external frame to the leg for about 10 weeks. Ceefa will be only the 9th cat ever to benefit from this. Of the other 8, 2 have needed a second op but all have had their leg saved. If it weren't for this then Ceefa would have had to have his leg amputated.

We'll give it a go. He's only 2 and the most dear little chap you could hope for so deserves to have his leg repaired if at all possible. Luckilly we didn't have to go through all the rigmarol of trying to find out if insurance covered such a new proceedure as we self insure so the vets have free rein to do whatever they need to without worrying about our insurance cover or limits.

Glad to hear that Ceefa should be able to keep his leg - although i've met 3 legged cats and they've coped well enough. The stray that we took in a few years ago had his leg pinned at somepoint in his life - only they never got round to taking out the pin which has left him with a leg he cant flex:stomp: Our vet has said it's too late to take it out now as must have been in there for years!

Fingers crossed for the op - am sure he'll be fine.

Glad to hear that Ceefa is going to keep the leg. I've had two cats knocked over one killed instantly and the other i found alive in the gutter but unable to move his backend. Loved him dearly and wanted to save him but he was 13, diabetic and wouldn't have come through the surgery so i had him put to sleep the same night. Broke my heart!

I'm so happy that your little man is going to be ok and such a brave cat too. It's amazing how animals deal with pain!

Healing vibes to Ceefa {{HUGS}}

Oh JC, hope he's ok, the vets can do wonderous things these days, my dog broke his back a couple of years ago and you'd be surprised how fast he can still run, I'm sure Ceefa will do well with him being so young and healthy.
