Hi, I have recently bought a traditional cob foal. He is 9 months old and currently standing at 13'1 at withers and 14' on his bum. Dam was around 14'2 and a cob and sire is believed to be a 16'2 cobby type.
Anyone any idea on what height he could make?

Most horses achieve 90% of their eventual height by twelve months. They can keep growing until they're 5 years old (or even 6 or 7 in some cases).

There is a method that involves measuring the leg length (forelegs) and then up to his wither but my brain is mush and I can't remember exactly how to do that!

With such a difference in the heights of the parents it's very difficult to say. He could end up the size of mum, he could take after dad or he could finish somewhere in between.

Huge width :)
Minimum of 14.1hh because the front you hope he gives you wither.

Mine is 14hh out of 14.2hh /15.2hh, soyou just never know.

Once he is past a year old you can measure from the middle of a forelimb fetlock, straight up to his elbow with a piece of string. Then hold the string at his elbow and swivel the fetlock piece round and up over his withers. Measure the distance of string above the wither and add on to his current height. This is usually accurate to within an inch or two but they have to be over 12 months for their legs to have stopped growing (after this all height is gained through their body) I did this on my traditional when he was just over a year old and it predicted him to top out at 14.1hh. He is now just turning 7 and measures...... 14.1hh :)

Interesting! I'm going to try that with my HiPo who's two. I actually think my welsh D has grown a bit and he's just turned 12! Or maybe it's with handling a youngster at the side of him. Welsh is was about 13.2 when I got him and is now more like 15.1
