Horse trailer insurance

Sorry if this it a really basic question but do you have to tax and insure a trailer as you would a car or lorry in order to take it on the road, or is it just a case of insuring for theft and fire etc?

Not sure there's any legal requirement.

I have it insured with Petplan and have additional breakdown insurance to cover breaking down with the trailer attached.

No tax required on a trailer

In theory no but do make sure your car insurance covers towing and take out appropriate rescue (PRP are brilliant)
