trying to do some sums, could you break it down so I can make sure I have everything on my list :redcarded:

Oh what the heck I posted before but I'll put something similar again. I put Roxy's budget into her own bank account so I can't accidentally spend it elsewhere - worthwhile & very helpful for budgeting.

Per month:
£130 livery
£10 storage
£55 insurance

TOTAL = £195

Per year:
£20 per farrier visit every 6-8 weeks = £240
£12 per wormer (give or take) every 13 weeks = £144
£45 per dentist visit every 6 months = £90
£5 on average per bale, allow for 30 per year = £150
£35 of Thunderbrook feed, lasts approx 6 months = £70

Divide all that by 12 to break it down monthly & it comes to £58.

Add that onto the monthly cost = £253

Obviously this doesn't include any chaff/chop, fly spray, fly masks, vet bills (unless huge & therefore covered by insurance) tack replacement, rugs and other maintenance things that add up now & then such as replacement brooms, ropes, headcollars, brushes, buckets etc.

I therefore round it up to £300 per month.

Thank you :D,

the bank account idea is a really good idea, would probs be something I should do :D

I often say that Toby should just have all my money put into an account for him!!!

I don't work it out because I know it would terrify me. I would think £300 would probably be about right unless we have a big purchase - ie. hay or something.

Exactly, it's about spreading the costs out per month. Sometimes we do go over if there's an expensive month that I haven't really thought about or a whopping vets bill that's obviously not planned, although usually if the money hasn't been spent a previous month it accumulates. I didn't used to be very disciplined about it and I've gotten a lot better and although it looks scary I like to know she definitely has money and that I can cover her expenses, no matter what else life has thrown at me.

When I had no tenants a while back I still allocated Roxy her £300 in her account before both my mortgage payments went out - to me it was more important to know she was covered and wouldn't have to go without. I had pretty much nothing left as a result but I stuggled by anyway! :smug:

I don't think I posted last time as I'm not online very much these days so here goes:

Farrier - £30
Wormers - £3.50
Feed (chaff/nuts) - £3.50 (averaged out)

I don't have a separate account or anything but I do have a massive overdraft facility in case of emergencies :D

my livery is 92 a week in summer and 148 in winter, but thats for five
20 a head for the big ones in summer and 12 for truffs, 30 a week in winter and 18 for truffs. Farriery, worming etc. is the same for me as mentioned by others, and I probably spend 100-120 a month in feed in winter. Insurance is about £1500 a year for them all

I'm very interested in this but gosh it's looking alot cheaper than what my mum has said!!
She told me that keeping a horse/pony out on grass would cost around £1500 a month <.<
I wonder why...

well I have so far ..

Horse costs

Livery (grass with use of school) - 15 per week - £60 per month
Insurance - 20-30 per month
Hay & feed - 50 per month ? (more in winter)
Farrier - ?? every 6-8 weeks
Dentist & Vaccs - ?? per month
Worm count / Wormer - ?? per month

for farrier I am not sure as he doesn't have shoes atm & I would probs keep him shoeless unless we start him jumping proper .. dentist & vaccs is something I need to look into same with wormers
