I’m quitting… no more riding

Hi all.
This is a very hard post to make. My parents have refused to give our horses proper care and expect me to do high level riding on a 21 year old horse who’s being ridden once a fortnight. I’m getting horses out of my life. My three are all being sold and I’m quitting lessons. All my posters, books and magazines are going. It’s been a really hard decision but I’ve really only got that one choice. Daisy hasn’t seen a farrier since February, I’ve been trimming them myself but I definitely don’t know what I’m doing, I only take if enough so she isn’t tripping and splitting. Jakes original owner will take him back, she just got a larger property and can take on more horses. Red might go to my coach, once he’s properly trained I think he’d make a good kids pony. Ok not sure what will happen with Daisy, I’m asking around with some friends.

I really feel I need to get away from horses, I’m not sure what I’ll do after that, I’ve always wanted to do falconry but it’s illegal in Aus.

Any way, I don’t know what to say now, see ya

It must be a really hard decision for you but sounds like it’s in the best interests of your horses. Hopefully you can find a new hobby to enjoy soon.

I hope so. I’ve tried so many sports and the only ones I enjoy I’m not allowed. No bullriding, no dirt biking, no driving, no superbikes or supermotos. I used to have a car that I’d drive though bush tracks near me, it was so fun. But all of those have been deemed too dangerous

Il so heartbroken, I can’t stop crying about it. I always thought I’d have Jake until he dies. He means so much to me. I honestly don’t know how I’ll cope without him, likewise Daisy and Red. Just thinking about sending them away is so hard, putting them into lives where I don’t know what will happen to them and separating them. I don’t want them to go but it’s the best for them

@diplomaticandtactful what's Lindley, and where was it mentioned?

@AJ Yammie can't you afford to keep one given you'd previously been paying costs for all of them? Given the only other hobbies you say you like are high speed I'm surprised horse riding outside of some types of competition was ever for you, but if it's the animal side of it you like how about something with dogs? Agility or obedience work? Sheep work? You'd still have contact with an animal but they're generally cheaper to keep than horses and don't need to be kept at a yard.

I can afford it kinda but I don’t have a job, I’m going off money I’ve previously Warby before COVID which is now running out and even if I was rich my parents wouldn’t let me spend the money on them.

I rode horses for the animal side of it, but yeah, I do like speed and my parents aren’t keen on it, which doesn’t make sense as my dad rode superbikes to a high level, trained with MotoGP champions and only ever broke one bone.

If I didn’t lose my car in the flood id be doing a lot of driving, there’s a track 5 kms from my house that my pop founded so I’d be able to get in quite easily.

Im not sure who or Laidly is either, Daisy is 14-18 years old, Jake is the 21 year old

I wouldn’t be able to do stuff with sheep because we have wild dog problems and don’t live there full time. Dad thinks if an animal isn’t making money it has to go, we have once dog who is 16, as blind as a bat and almost deaf. I used to have a cow that I wanted to start showing but she got killed by a pack of dogs. My friend just offered to give me some birds and my parents turned it down saying they don’t make moeny

Keeping pets can be a real burden if finances are tight, perhaps your parents don’t want get in the same position again with animals they can’t afford basic vet care for.
What types of things do your friends do? Do you have a dam you can go swimming with them or could you volunteer at a rescue centre or on a neighbours farm with animals?

Well the problem is we live in two places and we’re always jumping between them, i used to volunteer at a riding school but the boss refused to have me covered with workers insurance. There’s a dog boarding kennel at the end of my road and maybe in the holidays I could work for them or the horse tours a few kms away. I’d love to volunteer with birds but I have to be over 18 for all the places near me.

We have a dam but it’s got eels in it 😬 I got bitten by one a few years ago and it took half my toe. we’re river front but there are LOTS of sharks here, stingrays too.

Oo yeah maybe don't swim in there then! 😱

The dog boarding place sounds like it would be worth talking to them, volunteering there could possibly even lead to a paid summer job that would allow you a bit more freedom to do some things you like :)

I’ve met the owners at the kennel, they moved in a year ago and the old owners wernt nice so I was scared to meet them but they are lovely, they have two young kids, a few horses ans of course all the dogs. They wave to me every time I drive past. I’ll go talk to them when we’re at that place next, it won’t be a few weeks since my city is still in lockdown and we can’t leave
