I've been wondering about investing in a red light therapy machine of sorts to maybe help healing in tendons / legs in general. I've done several web searches but not managed to find much in the uk and nothing that looks vet endorsed / specialist. I wouldn't use anything without checking with my vet first anyway. But I did see a few youtube's but they were all over the pond. Has anyone any experience of using a machine here? Or having someone out to work on their horse? I know they do vary in price - some are a few thousand. Just wondered if anyone had any input? I just can't seem to find anything that looks like a guide online - any ideas? Thanks in advance.
 
I looked into it a while back and its one of the few home treatments my vet feels is worthwhile. It seems there is also a lot of research out there supporting its use, but mostly on people but muscles/tendons/ligaments are pretty standard so i don't think its unreasonable to assume its still pretty applicable to horses. It also seemed that there was a massive variation in price, though all red lights works it seems not all are made equal but I never really pinned down if the more expensive ones were worth the extra. I borrowed one from a friend for one of Jess' ailments, I think it was the odd swelling, and I can't say I noticed it made much difference and I did also try it on my achey self, again no difference, so I gave up with it pretty quickly :(

Thanks guys. I've sort of switched modes just by chance really. I was looking on Horse and Rider magazine and they have an equine arc machine that you can win. So I clicked on their website and now am seriously thinking of buying one. I know someone on here had one, but it was a long while ago and was wondering if they had any success with it.
I'm willing to try just about anything on her leg right now - anything that will assist in the healing. I have heard about shock wave therapy - and I know there are people that own machines and come around to do horses. That's not really appropriate for us right now, and I'd like to invest in something that I have control over.
 
My first thought is wouldn't you need to have done this within so many months of the injury happening?

That I don't know. But she has re tweaked it and I'm just trying to think of things that will help get it back to where it was before she re tweaked - nowhere near like an uninjured limb - but not like it is today (I hope that makes sense, it might not!)
 
It is @eventerbabe who had the arcequine I think. I have also coveted one of these for Jess but just couldn't afford it, have now seen they have £200 off, but don't think it will help a broken heart :(
I also asked my vet about shock wave, but she felt it was only appropriate for certain things. If she has just done a new injury to the leg then it's still going to be in the healing phase and red light aids healing so it won't hurt but there is nothing that can guarantee getting it back to where to was before sadly.

Yeah I saw the offer and that's what's prompted me, but I don't want to waste money. I've emailed the vet and am now waiting to see what she thinks. I know there are no guarantees - I'm probably clutching at straws, I just hope that she heals sufficiently to be able to go back into her paddocks. She was doing so well and seemed content. Hmm.

Red light therapy can help at all stages of injury. Our vet uses it on dogs and finds it one of the most effective and cost effective treatment for arthritis, whatever the cause.

My friend Catherine has a red light for equine use. It definitely helped Ziggy be more comfortable when he was recovering from one of his lamination's attacks and it is great at promoting healing in humans. They are expensive to buy - better to hire one for a bit if you can to see if it helps your patient :)

Thanks for that, I think you mentioned it a while ago. That's useful to know it can be used at all different stages of injury (being as hers is quite old originally). Anything that keeps her comfy really - I'll have to do some more research and weighing up. I don't think I'd be able to hire one here, I don't mind investing in one - it's something that I will most likely use on the others at some point - but they do vary such a lot price wise.
 
Hulloo! Yes. I have an arc equine. Worth EVERY penny. Initially bought thanks to wonky donkey Kez and his mystery lameness. Arc gave me a program to follow with him using it daily. Toby tweaked a tendon last autumn and also used it for a week. We saw a huge improvement, so much so he was as sound as a horse with an existing tendon injury could be. There are a number of folks who do hire in the Aberdeenshire area. I'm sure they could post to you @Trewsers ? If you'd like some names I'll PM them. I bought my arc back in 2015 and it has been used pretty much daily ever since.

I'd really like to buy one, I just wasn't sure if they would be okay for her existing injury. She re tweaks it regularly :rolleyes: and we do all we can to get her back to "right" well, as right as she can be! Thanks for posting - I thought it was you that had one and I seem to remember you were pleased with it.
