Everything is so sad on the forum at the moment that I thought I'd share someone very special in my life which came into it from a dark time...

When I was 13 we were given a puppy. A west highland white terrier puppy.

We were given a puppy because ours had just died, a freak accident after being very ill. The people we had got her off were so upset that they bought us another puppy.

We already had one dog, another Westie called Haggis, the one we lost was called Neeps and our new dog.... because Tatties "was a stupid name" was called Mash. (We later got ourselves another Neeps - completely different but just as special).

Mash has always been a character but never a sociable dog, never really wanted to play, never wanted fuss and attention... just wanted to know that someone was there. She'd often curl up with me on the sofa while we watched TV.

This time last year, having lost Neeps in the summer, Mash was given two weeks to live... we were understandably devastated.

Fast-forward to today, she is now 15, deaf, a very fussy eater, suffers from an irregular heartbeat and as much of a character as ever. My parents often take her up to their place in the Lake District... if she escapes, she runs to the pub next door and tries to get in. She's charmed the barman into giving her sausages and black pudding (after spitting the dog biscuits on the floor). She frustrates my mum but stopping to drink from ever single puddle on their short walk round the block. She sits at the dinner table... never scrounges but gets some food from each of us once we've finished eating.

Last week she gave us a scare, she had a bad few days and I was worried I'd return from my holiday in December to find that she had left us, but suddenly she is happy and bouncy again, greeting me at the door with a wagging tail... She is the joy of my life. She has up days and down days but every day with her is precious.

If you have read my ramblings so far, thank you. I'm not sure why I felt the need to share this story with you all today but I'll reward you now with some pictures of my 'puppy'.
