Leaning forward when halting

When ever I try to halt or slow down a horse, I end up leaning forward, and sometimes almost come out of the saddle. Whenever I do that, the horse thinks that I'm trying to make him go faster ( I don't blame him), but I'm not. How can I break this nasty habbit before if becomes a real problem???

In the past, I tended to lean forward in the halt. My instructor was relentless in reminding me every time I did this and got at me to keep my shoulders and my back straight. Practice helped for me as I am nearly rid of this habit. She also encourages me not to lose contact with the lower leg when I halt, which is another thing I used to do - for some reason I would almost take the leg right off the horse.

For me, constant reminders were what it took to sort this out.

maybe you can try to concentrate on putting more weight into your seat when you halt, because to get more weight into your seat you have to be sitting upright and you won't be able to lean forward. Hope this helps.
