Loving summer but actually looking forward to winter, just me?

I'm enjoying summer, not had such a dry hot summer in a long time, but this means the ground is rock hard. Even if I hadn't of broke my ribs I wouldn't want to be cantering/jumping on it, which is just boring! Fed up of the horse flies, got a really nasty bite on my leg atm. We've now had the longest day which means autumn hunting isn't too far away. For the first time in years I'm actually looking forward to September onwards, hunting!! Really miss thundering along on the I.B.P, socialising with friends, hip flasks :p Is anyone else looking forward to winter or is it just me? I think I have become hunting mad since having Lottie

She really is happiest when she's following hounds, those ears say it all!

I love summer too much to be wishing this away, our ground is hard here which is virtually unheard of because of our sandy soil and there's things we can't do because of it but there will be plenty of time for all that when the weather breaks (or day trips to the beach in the mean time) so until then I am enjoying the amazing weather and making the most of it :)

Not wishing summer away, just need a few showers.
Our ground easily becomes too wet to ride on come Autumn but currently almost as hard as the road.
I am getting in some nice picnic rides. :D

Maybe it's because I'm not really enjoying it, I've not ridden for 4 weeks this Sunday :( I'm just walking her round the roads in hand. Just glad it's not happened during hunting season then I would be really gutted. I've also had to pull out our inter hunt relay team which I'm disappointed about, I was really looking forward to it and would of been right up Lottie's street.

I love the weather too, I’ll take the flies over mud and heavy wet rugs, freezing cold fingers and dark days and nights. However I must admit I am losing a bit of my riding mojo because the ground is so hard and it’s so hot I’m at a loss to know what to do. Walking round the roads is boring and the school is dusty. I’m worried that Raf is losing fitness. We even have stubble now but the ground is too hard ... I’m looking forward to autumn hunting, but not so much that I’m wishing the summer away lol.

This morning I was chunnering away to myself whilst trying to strap Chloe into her fly rug (she had other ideas and wandered off into the long grass which mean I got bitten sh*tless:eek:)I was cursing the flies! Lol but I love the wall to wall sun here, it only goes dark properly for about an hour and a half, and it is just so novel peeping out and spying on the horses:D
I was making plans the other night for updating their rug situ though. Here we don't get much minus temp weather, but we do get wet and windy. So I am thinking of three new rain sheets. Might just tempt them to stay in their paddocks rather than hiding in the byre for hours on end!

Have any scientists done a study about horse flies in regards to whether it's temperature or time dependant?
Today rode out in 21 degrees which is 70f for those who understand that a lot more- myself included!
The two sections you usually get nibbled they were not about to cause me any issues. Swat the odd one. She is wiped in repellent underside as per norm.

In the past I found the horse flies were temperature controlled. Here because it is much cooler in summer they don't make an appearance much before end of June, whereas at old place beginning of May some years.

Not wishing this dry weather away but just a little cooler would be nice. So I don't have to sweat all day and feel like I'm about to pass out.
The dry hard ground isn't bothering me although I know that we desperately need some rain for the grass to start growing to feed the animals. It annoys me that two people I know are watering there lawns and flowers as they are looking brown and wilted. The one knows that they are talking of hose pipe bans and limiting shower time and yet they still water there lawn.

@Trewsers and @Kite_Rider I also love to pootle :D

I am loving the blue skies and sunshine and have now started to adjust to the high temperatures but I really could do with a few rain showers, during the night would be good :p desperately need the grass to grow. We have had a hose pipe ban in place for a few days now.

Can I be picky & specify what sort of winter I want? This summer is too much to be fun.
Could you opt for one that's drier than the last one. So that we don't don't have to buy in extra hay and it delays our move to Spring grazing.
A cold chilly bug killing one that you can wrap up and ride and not get totally frozen just popping out for an hour.

I love the weather. Due to Ben’s lameness we can only hack out in walk anyway so I would rather do that in sun compared to the rain and cold. If we were back to normal I would be frustrated with the hard ground, but as things are I am quite happy.
