Traditionally when saddlers used to make everything rather than have it bought in from a wholesaler we'd measure the horse for a girth by measuring from the bottom of the buckle tongue on one side to the bottom of the buckle tongue on the other side. Now with the common use of extended barred girth buckles and everyone buying their own off the peg it is the norm to measure from end of buckle to end of buckle.
