With your advice I made a scratch-free section of field for Sid. He spent last night in it and this morning his ears were so, so much better.

He had what looked like a horrible piece of proud flesh on one hind leg, but when I washed it it proved to be pink goop, presumably from scratching his ears with his back leg.

Today, though, it has been hot and sunny. I can't leave him standing in the field with no shade, so have made him a very small paddock underneath the oak tree by my entrance. Unfortunately there are gateposts etc, and although he hasn't damaged himself badly his bad ear is bloody again after only a couple of hours.

I need shade for his non-scratch paddock. What I would like is something like this, made out of wood I suppose with shade netting - not waterproof fabric, the field is too dry anyway and also it would blow away. If I put the posts outside the non-scratch paddock, on the track, he wouldn't be able to get to them to scratch.:

Questions:

* do you think this could work?
* does anybody make such a thing?
* what might work instead? A poly tunnel????

Or you could put fence panels up in the corners so that they cast shade for the hotter - usually afternoon - parts of the day. Since they depend on the sun being at an angle they won't work midday, but then I often find the idiots ignore shade and prefer to be out in the heat anyway.

Sun shade angle it off the tree, Or set it up at an angle outside the area and it will naturally produce a shadow.
A cheap gazebo will do the same thing.
Pallets and tarp
Straw bales stacked, out of reach.

Do you have a trailer? Park that on the side the sun moves over to in the day, it will create a shadow.

A cheap shade sail would work between a couple of posts. Or one of those counterlever garden umbrellas if you happen to have one you could lend him.
Honestly I wouldn’t be too worried about shade, it’s not hot hot yet, Niko is out in a paddock with no shade in the day and it hadn’t even crossed my mind.

Why don't you ask a local carpenter whether he can make this kind of shade or not. May be he can help you.
