Just a thought, I used old scaffold board to park my lorry on soft ground, you can buy old boards cheaply as they are condemned for scaffold use.

Laid across the area with battons on the ends to keep them together they would provide a "patio" for the horses :p
Wouldn't wood get slippery pretty quickly? Good to know for other uses though :)

Planks would be too dangerous, too easily move and batons equals nails. They rot just as quick as wood chip left on damp ground. That gets a thumbs down from me I'm afraid.
