my current yard is less than 5 min walk away only problem is there is no winter turnout and the school is more like a mud bath than a school which is the only place we can turn out why we muck out. But when someone wants to lunge or ride we cannot turn out and as there are 27 liveries it is a total nightmare my 2 have been in now for 6 weeks and will not go out again untill next may which is a long time for the poor horses yo as now said we cant walk the horses up and down the yard to stretch their legs and we are not allowed to tie up out side the stables so we have to muck out around the horses.Anyone else in this predicament.

I was last winter, and I moved away from it. The winter before, on the same yard, was ok, but on Christmas day last year Daffy could barely walk - he has some joint problems and stiffened up. He is so much better now that we have daily turnout, even if he only gets 30minutes (like yesterday, we were at a show) and I work him in the school on an evening.

Tell us where you are and somebody might know of something. :)

Oh God, my old yard was EXACTLY like that. The first winter I was there, it was fine, but suddenly the next year the owner went MENTAL and closed the winter fields completely. We spent most of the winter with no turnout AT ALL, and then she agreed to let us use her crappiest field (by crappy, I mean it was tiny but really really steep and uneven and it had a bog in the middle of it). It was really only big enough for two or three horses, but this waas what we had to share between over 20 horses. Even with the half day per horse rule that she brought in there were far too many horses, and some owners were just turning their's out in the morning and leaving them all day because they couldn't afford to pay for someone to bring them in. The only ones allowed menage turnout were the unbacked ones - though one hour a day for three baby arabs isn't enough anyway! The YO excluded a two yr old cob gelding from menage turnout on the grounds that he had been backed (don't ask about this one, it was a fiasco all round. He was bought as a three yr old but turned out to be younger. For a NOVICE), which obviously really helped his behaviour!
It was utter chaos, and completely insane given that this YO had at least twice the amount of land she needed for the number of horses she had on the yard. Plus, she used to RENT out land in the winter to local farmers for their sheep and cows.
I say move ASAP. I was only 11 at the time the above occurred, and stayed on the yard for another 6 years because it was the only one I'd ever known (to be fair, the owner did at least get some all weather turnout paddocks built, so the horses did get three hours a day even if it was no substitute for a good run in the field). Then I moved last year, got plenty of turnout all year round and have never been happier!

I cant believe yards like this exist, to me limited turnout of maybe 3-4 hours a day in winter might be just about ok, but any less than that is just a unacceptable for a horses welfare. I dont think they need to be out 24/7 unclipped running free lalala but really what kind of life is a prison cell 24/7.

Move , move, move!!

I totally agree wih you 100% - how the horses put up with that without going bonkers is beyond me. I completely understand that in some areas with the price of land / bad weather / poor draining fields that t/o sometimes has to be limited, but I would personally (and this is just my own opinion) not accept less than 6 hours turnout per day. These are outdoor herd animals we are talking about. You wouldn't even keep a small furry in a cage of the equivalent dimensions of a horse to a stable for 22-24h per day.

That is soo not on, IMO move, not good for you or neddies, as others have said where are you in the country?

I have moved recently as i needed a cheaper yard. Im in Lancashire/yorkshire/peak district border and it took 2 months to locate a yard that allowed the horses out in winter! V.strange after the midlands where 24/7 turnout all year is the norm but its colder, clay soil and very wet up here but wonderful hacking!

The winter turnout is a a big but not very grassy field. however the y/o's view is that the horses should get out to socialise and move around during the day and it suits mine really well. The better fields are saved for 24/7 turnout in summer (also uncommon aroung here) its also great for me as mine desperatly needs to lose weight after a bout of laminities in spring.

livery

hi where are you livery avalible in halifax all year turnout can come in or live out on small yard

Ive never understood this no winter turnout?:eek:

At our yard when it gets really wet the horses are to come in at night, (YO an her OH's rules to protect fields) Mine go out bout 9am and in bout 4.30pm. But thats to fit in my day, some are out 6.30am and not in till about 6/7pm.

If you do want winter turnout they will allow it in certain fields further from yard, were summer paddocks wont get all churned up, however their not keen and prefer as many as possible in over night.

It just doesnt seem fair to keep them in all winter, also turning out in sand schools does ruin them so i can only imagine how bad some of them get.

I understand some yards struggle for turnout space, however surely the should controll liveries to a level that the property can cope with?

I moved from a yard 10 minutes away to one 1.5 hours away to get all year 24/7 t/o as he did not like stables. I am up there 5 days a week though YO does him two days so I can come home from work at the sensible time. As he lives out I only go once a day. Long term I am looking for move house to be nearer!

I understand that some yards cannot offer 24/7 turnout all year but something basic should be available so they can get out and stretch their legs everyday for at least a few hours. To not be able to walk the horses around the yard or tie them up outside the stables is very extreme - does the YO have no knowledge of horses? It is greed on the behalf of YO that causes this sort of situation where there is not enough land to sustain the amount of horses. Personally I don't think it is very nice to shut a horse up in its stable for non medical reasons for 6 months a year, I would be looking for a new yard if I were you.

If financially you cannot afford to go somewhere else or the travel is difficult then look at getting a sharer.

I am in the westhoughton area lancs. i only need a couple of hours a day weather permitting surely thats not too much to ask for. another thing the YO put new fencing around the school at the beginning of the summer but then she had some great big massive lorry tyres but round as well to stop the horses getting to the fence and guess what??? one of the young girls came off her horse tonight and fell on the tyres and hurt her back, shoulder and ribs it was dreadfull we all went to the Yo and told her we where not happy with the tyres being there and she said if we didnt like it we could find somewhere else to go

two words - MOVE YARDS.
Sounds awful, with a thoughtless and inconsiderate YO to boot. Look everywhere, ask around (farriers often know where's good and has vacancies), and the sooner the better.
Silly YO, with increasing numbers of people having to give up riding for financial reasons she should be thankful to have liveries in the first place.

Hi there is one stable left on our yard in Abram, plenty of winter turnout, and lovely people, even if I do say so my self lol I have only been there 2 months and my boys have settled in great. Pm me if you want more details.
