So Kia and I went to the penecuik Common ride. Was fab except from being bulldozed into a ditch by an out of control Past Biggar Cornet. Needless to say he got the sharp edge of my tongue when I caught up to him at he top of the hill. The vid is long and compilation of clips. Old man did well, more walking than anything this year as the ground was too hard and it was a lot shorter due to lack of field access due to the wet winter and very dry spring. So we managed the full thing as it finished at 13.30 or so this year instead of later :)

Wonderful pictures! I'm rather fascinated by these common rides, and would love to take part some day: how do I find out more? Is there such a thing as a hireling trade, where folks can just show up, rent a horse and ride, or is a more formal introduction to the locality and its culture recommended?

Yes there are two main hireling centres, it’s quite pricey but you will be given a. Horse to match your level :)

Fabulous pics! Some lovely horses there - not to mention himself of course. We stayed in a holiday cottage in Lilliesleaf one year and watched the riding come through. They stopped for a lunch break in a field just opposite and I looked for ages. Fascinating. Again some fantastic fit horses there as well as a fair smattering of ponies including some very muddy knackered ones... Looks great fun but I wouldn't dare - too much cantering on the spot and bouncing around for a scaredy cat like me. Looks like Kia had a grand old day out.

That looks great. You live in a such a lovely place:D. What is all the shouting about, i'm sure its a traditional thing but what's the story behind it? Yeah him on the coloured horse seemed to cut you up a bit there

It’s traditionally the laddies our riding and checking the boundary stone, the shouting is different usually in every town as they will have their own songs and sashings and chants :)

Yep even his friends and fellow cornets were tearing him up about it. He had a horse he couldn’t ride as a lot of people were moaning about him, he needs rocking horse

I don’t know how Kia kept us both upright, thank goodness he has a great sense of where his feet are.

What's a cornet?
That looks so much fun, didn't realise you could get hire lings for them, that might have to be added to my bucket list :D

The Cornets are the principles of the rides. They have specific names like Lord Cornet for lanark or Whipman for West Linton :) Means they are the chief lad if you like who lead the processions and along with the elected queens or courts they are the centre of the festivals :)

Yep this is the list for this year so quite a bit chunk of money but loads of people pay it every week
