Harvey is allergic to a few different types of tree pollen and has been much better since he had a course of desensitisation injections as he used. To rub great big raw patches off himself all over. Anyway he no longer does that and last year was pretty good but I have noticed last few days that the pollen has been bothering him again.

It is mainly on his nose. He has a few bald patches the size of a 5p coin or smaller . He also had a runny nose and keeps wiping his nose. He looks like he has hay fever lol. He is a little itchy under rugs but not too bad at the moment although is rolling a fair bit.

So can anyone recommend a nose net? Do they work? I need one for in the field and also one for ridden work, ideally that Can be used in local level sj and dressage.

Also I need to get him some sort of rug that is lightweight but won't let pollen through, full neck. Like a fly rug but more of a material eg. No holes. Will only need it until may time I think and again late autumn.

Supplements - do they work for pollen or not? Have been looking at global herbs scratch and pollenx but wouldn't know which one to use!

Oh and while anyone is looking could also do with a uv protection face mask and or rug for Ellie for the summer as she looks like she gets a sunburnt nose as has very pink skin.

I use The weatherbeeta summer sheet combos (ripstop cotton sheet in white with green check). Have got a shores ultra flector to try this year but the fit is horrendous on madam and much thinner fabric (much easier to get hold of though). Equestrian clearance were the best place for the weatherbeeta one - cheap and mine have lasted 2 seasons with repairs.

Thanks pfb unfortunately weatherbeeta don't really fit Harvey and rub him ( pull back over his wither too) otherwise that would have been fine, he's a 5ft 6 in rugs which isn't the easiest to find either. Weatherbeeta fits Ellie nicely though.

Something I’m sadly experienced with! i apologise now for waffling!

I use NostrilVet - all details on their website – fantastic product but I only mainly use it before events/schooling etc
http://www.nostrilvet.com/about_nostrilvet.php

On a daily basis though he gets this from start of spring to end of autumn – winter is the only time he has no signs

I didn’t have any luck using pollenx but heard others who have

I also use this nose net as found out of most brands this works and lasts – fine at BD/ BE local dressage /jumping also

Sun cream I personally swear by ‘Barriers Sunburn Soother’ as my horse also has photosensitivity and this allows him out on high UV days without worry of burning and without a uv rug to protect him. Before he was diagnosed with photosensitivity – his burns were healed by this, but now just prevent it.

Another good product I have seen used is filtabac – all around useful product

I don’t use a rugs anymore – But I did years ago used Mark Todd full combo fly rug and derby houses own brand fly combo – both great but I just didn’t want my horse wearing a rug all year round and found by using a combination of the above products and my homemade flyspray/diluted ditto; we have found things that suit him and his conditions to let him go out naked

thanks Nookster, that's all great and i will look at them all in detail later today. I would much prefer to not have to use rugs if possible. Harvey is normally worse now to about June time and then is ok rugless until about September until mid novemeber and then he just gets rugged because he's clipped then.

With Ellie, I think it is mainly her nose that is going to get burnt, and her bottom lip so a good cream should work wonders.

I had seen the equil;ibrium nose net and had been umming and arring about buying, so helpful to know it works.

He looks like he has hayfever today with a runny nose which is pink inside, and a few more sore spots on his nose - he doesn't often have any problem with breathing from it though which is something to be thanklful about i suppose.

Shay has allergies, seems to be to tree pollen and rapeseed.

He wears a nose net when ridden, and if I can get it on him a flymask with a nose net in the field (mines fairly tough as the nose nets don't last long in the field).
I've tried sprays and such but he hates them and won't let me near him with them.
If he starts to cough and gets a bit of an itchy nose them I give him a small scoop of epsom salts in his feed or hidden in something (I found out about this when doing research on COPD for uni) it really does seem to work wonders and he stops coughing in about 30 mins and seems happy again. If he's really bad then I give him a piriton.

Thanks,

I have now just bought Harvey a Equilibrium nose net for ridden work - it says i can use it for dressage too and most local shows won't mind i wouldn't have thought (but best not for showing lol) I have also bought him a Equilibrium field relief mask for in the field too and got one for Ellie too as they are for against sunburn.

Derby house has them on offer at the moment -

£8.39 for the field relief and £17.97 for the nose net at the moment.

I will prob get some of that barriers sunburn soothers for Ellie too.

I will probably start him on Pollenx too and see if that works, I did look at the PollenEase but it has Bee Pollen in it which is likely to cause anphalatic shock with him. I might try adding some nettles to his diet too.

He's allergic to Birch, Alder and Hazel Trees so hopefully he will be ok again from end of May onwards for a while.

My friend uses pollen ex with good results, has to make sure that she she starts her cob in it well in advance though.
