Riding in the new forest

My mom has suggested we go for a hack in the new forest on Saturday as she is coming to visit me and I was wondering if anyone knew of somewhere we could hire a couple of horses for a couple of hours rather than going out in a group, we just want to do our own thing if you know what I mean rather than have to be lead. She's a BHSAI so completely confident doing this, would this make a difference as I know people probably wouldn't loan out to complete novices?

Or even anywhere that does an advanced hack (not too advanced for me!) but rather than just walking, I called Burley riding club but it's £50pp there which seems a lot, but I guess it's not, I just don't want her fishing out £100 on me she bought my hat for me last week bless! So maybe something I could afford ?

Cheers,
Cassie

I've not heard of anywhere that hires horses for unaccompanied rides. I used to take my daughter to the riding stables at Forest Park Hotel, Brockenhurst quite regularly when we were down in that part of the world, and there were quite a few NR meets there in the old days. The riding is fab, 99% off road in the woods and heathland, and the 2 hour ride is active but not too active so might well be what you're after. Similar prices to Burley though I would have thought.

Looks like they're both owned by the same people now :)

I think you'll be lucky to find somewhere in the forest that will allow you to take two horses out unaccompanied, I don't know of anywhere round here that will let you do that.

OH and I rode Western in the New Forest with a contact from NR. Rather pedestrian for you and your Mum - but to get to the point.
I dont know who supplied the horses you rode in Sussex but my experience is that it is pretty much unknown in the UK to find horses that are hired out to go on hacks with unaccompanied clients. Hiring of horses happens in the hunting world, it seems, but not for hacking.

Even a BHS AI wouldnt be allowed to go out on their own. I've hacked out at my own school with an AI friend from NR, and we still had an escort because it is a question of insurance - a staff member needs to be present. I ride "share" horse out on my own. But if I choose to hack somewhere else, using an RS horse, I must be escorted. I used to fret at this, but I dont any longer.

If you want to hack with your Mum and want to go as fast or slow as you two wish, I wouldnt rule out going on a private accompanied hack just for two people. You need to ring up a few schools and ask. The charge per head is usually less if there are two of you. And it isnt a disadvantage to have someone with you who knows the bridle paths. £50 per head seems rather a lot - OH and I dont pay that much per hour to hack together and this is London prices.

It was my friends horses in Sussex so not a paid hack :).

I don't mind an accompanying person it's just the big group trips I'm not fond on because you can end up paying a lot and have someone in the group who has never ridden before and end up walking the whole thing. The advanced ones seem 2 hours only which ends up quite expensive. Though I think I'm going to try and find a beach ride instead alas I'm finding the same price problems doh! I just want to be rich and have my own horses and a trailer, but I'm not :(.
