Riding kit for men?

Hey Destin,

I'm not a man so I can't offer advice on what to wear, but if it's any consolation I'm sure I look like Max Wall in my black jods. I've given up worrying about it though as I've noticed that horses always get more attention than their riders anyway!!

ahhh, if you keep riding, TRUST me, you'll get over that self-conscious feeling pretty quick!

i'm sure every adult rider goes through that (i did when i started riding again), but you really do get over it. Tikki's right; very few people are going to notice or care how you look in your jods! ;>

as well, you'll find the comfort factor involved in wearing jobs/breeches over, say, jeans or other trousers FAR outweighs the slight bit of worry that you look like a complete ninny.

Hiya Destin, Yes we've all done the "does my bum look big in this" at the tack shop. As a woman of 32 I was mortified at the sheer variation of jod sizes, lycra, elastane and other such trussing aids. Trust me. No one gives a hoot what your bottoms look like as long as you have good protection around your knees and inner leg and feel comfy. For the first few years of riding I used to wear leggings(not advised), jeans (very cold and unhealthy when wet)cords (!) and now my beloved dubliners.
If you feel silly wearing light jods, plum for either black , navy or green ones. You dont have to look like Harvey Smith.
Best of luck

Hey! How about wearing chaps over your jeans? You don't have to look like a cowboy (if you don't want to),there are English Riding Chaps, they look really good although they area bit too warm in the summer (at least in Texas!)

hi destin yep all the others are right , i,m a guy of 40 now ( it was my birthday two weeks ago ) i felt just as you do , i felt everybody was looking at me in my new jods , but soon found after riding a few times people were more interested in me than what i was wearing , and very soon became less self conscious of my jods , so i would say get yourself some jods and stop worrying about what other people may think , we are all our own worst crirics so it matters not what anyone else thinks , have fun riding .

Hi I've got an idea for you, but if you are jumping they won't do. My boyfriend (35yrs old) will not wear the jods but picked up a pair of Saddleseat pants they come in dark colors, have an elastic strap that goes around the bottom of your boots so they don't ride up, don't have stretch (ie. lycra/spandex) and don't have an inseam so they won't dig when you ride. Andy can go for hours on hacks in them in total comfort at all gaits and from my totally biased perspective they look great. We found them in Kentucky but with internet shopping you could have them in a matter of days. You just need to provide your waste size. I can try to help you find them on the web if you like.Even though he's switched to hunter/jumper no one has commented on his "attire"... Cheers Karin
