Riding & Road safety & PTT

nature abhors normality
Hi,

I was up at the pony club riding and road safety exams on Sunday as a steward (a friend was riding in the exam and needed me to drive her over). I remembered a good bit from my own pony club days and it all seemed quiet straight forward and common sense.

I have done my stage 1 riding and care and my stage 2 and stage 3 care exams. I have been teaching for about 10 years at the yard where I keep my horse. The YO is an AI so as I am a student I have been able to teach in the yard. I also teach in another private yard one evening a week (under the property owners insurance).

I can echo what is being said in other thread in this board - I am satisfied I can teach (as are the yards clients), but to BHS certtified I need a lot more. I figure if I got as far as stage 3 I might as well try get a bit further! Insurance wise Id also feel a bit better if I had more exams

so:
- is the BHS riding and road safety much different to the pony club exam and what kind of standard should I expect? I have made contact with the place that runs the exams in ireland and will do the training day with them before the exam but i want to prepare myself.
- Do I still need to do my stage 2 riding to do my PTT exam? I know this was the rule, just wondering if anything has changed
-I know that the BHS accepts letters from chiropractors - but do they accept them from spinologists? I have scoliosis so while I can ride well, my position is not always perfect. In order to do stage 2 riding I will need a letter

I know some of these answers can be found by emailing/calling teh BHS but I always preref to get advice from people who have done the exams themselves and have experience (i.e. you guys!)

any advice appreciated , L

Im sure the pony club RRS test is the same one as the one you need for the exams.

Im sure you do need both elements of each exam to do the PTT but dont qoute me on that, as you have got the stage 3 care they might let you let off but not too sure :)

go to a bhs school - they most probably let you of stage 1
but no more-- as you only have care exams and not bhs stages

for the correct information ring up the bhs and ask
they have reps in each area so find the one closes to you
they wont bite

Yes, write to the BHS.
You need to consult them about your particular case because you may find that you are exempt from some of the stages? Because oif the tests you took before?
But only if you can find the certificates.

To do the PTT - which can be problem free for anyone experienced in teaching - you need the BHS road safety and first aid too as well as Stage 2 (both parts I think but I am not sure of that)

The most important thing is to write to the BHS about your physical limitations. It is possible that they may want a letter from a doctor?

It is no good going to a BHS recognised school to take the test and assuming that the instructors there are up to date or conversant with the allowances made by the BHS for the physically impaired.

I didnt know that. I had a preparatory lesson or two for the Riding and Road safety and then the instructor told me I couldnt take the test because I cant dismount the normal way. (Even though I can both mount and dismount without using a mounting block for emergencies)

This turned out to be nonsense. The BHS told me that they wanted to be as inclusive as possible. The BHS offered to send me to another school where I could take the test. I didnt take up their offer, as I couldnt be bothered. I had already done the course and learned to ride safely.
I didnt need the qualification.
But you need the exam for your career, so dont be discouraged. Just go for it.
I am sure you are doing the right thing to want the qualifications.
I encourage the girls who escort me on hacks to get their AI qualification. Though it costs a bit in membership and exam fees, I think it right that as an AI you will then get a better hourly rate for teaching?
