Can anyone recommend either somewhere in the North East (preferably not far from Middlesbrough) that do self-hire 3.5t horseboxes for a day; or a horse transporter who won't charge me the earth?
My trailer is out of commission, and really only fit for the scrap heap but regardless, since my parent's 4x4 was written off, we no longer have anything to tow with. I've been sent a schedule for a show that's 18 miles away and I really want to get the horses to it, as most very local events don't seem to be doing youngstock classes / classes for daft TBs and this one has both.
So far, I've been quoted around £200 to £250 for a single day for a two-stall horsebox so I wouldn't even have the option to split the cost with someone else :eek:Is this about the norm??
If so, it's immediately a no starter! We show for fun, and this year I especially wanted to get the baby out and about to socialise her, but £200 a go, plus entry fees is a bit steep.

I don't know about where you are but those prices are about the norm for a self drive. I'd even go so far to say that's very reasonable (esp if it incl VAT).

You best bet for cheaper transport might be to ask a friend to drop off/collect. Pay diesel and put something into the "friendship fund" !

Looking at the difference in lorry and trailer hire, is there nothing you could use to pull it? Its a hHUGE difference? i assume the lorry doesnt come full of fuel either?

James Jefferson - based in Chester-Le-Street area though so possibly bit far from you to be convenient. I have a friend based in Stockton-on-Tees area so will ask her who she used to use (she's just got her own box) and costs/contact numbers.

Thanks, guys :)
Unfortunately neither my car nor my parents new car has a tow bar, and although my OH is able to drive a 3.5t box (in his thirties and has a full UK license), only my stepmother is licensed to tow.
I shall keep ringing around. I think I'd probably grit my teeth and put up with around £100 (and seriously rethink the number of things I want to go to this year!), but £200 is just silly money to me when it's to do a couple of fun classes only 20 miles away. The A12 hire place looks pretty good!

Other thought would be to see whether my car could tow a trailer and two neddies and see about getting a towbar fitted.... Failing that, I need to sell it and buy a 4x4 and insure my stepmum to drive it for me!

Heres another idea if you can get someone who is able to tow a trailer. Where I live and there might be somewhere near you too I can hire a trailer for £40.00, Thrifty car hire, hire out vehicles with tow bars (the driver must be covered by their own car insurance) so its an option. Also are there any transporters near you, ones that come with driver who will take you to a show, wait for you then bring you back. You will probably need a few friends to join to make it cost effective though.

No idea about geography though of that in relation to you.......around here (South East silly prices) you can hire a 3.5 tonne for the day for approx £100

But you will need to be able to leave a £500 deposit (usually on a credit card)

Thanks for posting a link to our website but the more usual address is
http://www.northernhorseboxes.co.uk

We are based in Darlington and do have Renault Master horseboxes to rent. The charge is £125 a day which includes unlimited mileage, insurance and VAT. We certainly do not request a £500 deposit!

Sez, if you contact us I'm sure we can agree some kind of deal to get you out and about.

The norm is around £200 minimum for a weekend, thats collect the lorry on a Friday evening and return it Sunday evening. I was looking into it a whille back as I wanted to take my horse home to Exeter for a weekend but its way too expensive and too much driving for me as the nearest self drive is a hundred or so miles away so if you add that into the 120 miles each way to Exeter its a lot of driving in a weekend!

Are you a member of your local riding club? If you were you could ask if anyone is going and could give you a lift.

Self Drive is cheaper if you hire the box for 6months.

Don't have any other ideas for you I'm afraid.
