...the word Ergot?
I pronounce it ( in my head) err got. I’ve never said it out loud.
Got to thinking about it last night (I couldn’t sleep)
Now thinking it could be
Err go
Air got
Air go

Has anyone actually said this word in a conversation?

Err-got. And yes, I have said it several times, when asking the farrier to trim them!
I'm glad I'm not the only person who thinks about this sort of stuff when they can't sleep :D

Thanks for that, I have always wondered too ...

Can anyone tell me the correct words for the ones on:

a) the front legs (I've always called these chestnuts)

b) the hind legs (This is what I think of as ergots, now I can correctly pronounce it in my head)

c) the back of the fetlock joint? (absolutely no idea)

No idea if its correct, but I've always called chestnuts half way up the leg front and back and ergots are the ones on the bottom/back of the fetlock

It's er-got, I believe plain and simple.

As well as the horse's thumbnail it is the fungal infection of rye which causes St Vitus' Dance. So now you know (I bet some of you already did!).
