hehehe
The Royal Highland Show is taking steps to introduce classes for Yaks at the 2017 Show.
Domesticated yaks have been kept for thousands of years in Mongolia, but now being kept in large numbers across Scotland where they do well at altitudes above 1,500 metres. Their hair hangs down under their bellies forming a ‘skirt’ – a natural occurrence, which early Scottish explorers observed and brought back to this country, when they developed the kilt to keep the lower half of their bodies warm.
Yaks grunt and, unlike cattle, are not known to produce the characteristic mooing sound of cattle, which inspired the scientific names of both yak variants, bos grumpy yins (grunting bull) and bos mooths-shut (silent bull).
Consideration is being given by Show organisers to host some of the exciting Yak sports, such as Yak Polo, in the years ahead.
A fact that you may not know is that Yaks are actually quite tall animals at 2 metres high, with long strands of their coats hanging over their faces - but they don’t let just anyone pull the wool over their eyes – unlike some.
Let us know your thoughts!
