I took a photo today of the abscess hole plus bruised sole. That's for my records so I can look back at any changes etc etc etc.

But I thought you might be interested to see what's happened to the offside (outside) hind hoof which is directly behind the offside (outside) fore.
You can see she's grown some excess wall. It's ruddy sharp actually as she's not been out of the field for nearly a month. I am hoping that as we start our inhand walks, this will wear down.
She's trimmed every eight weeks, and was only done two weeks ago.

I am no expert but my thinking is that she's moved her weight to the hinds and her body has compensated? The other hind has one piece of extra wall, no photo as the light was crap that side.

It’s not extra wall, that’s where the whiteline has hardened in this dry weather and hasn’t been worn away. If you let the foot get wet it would wear off quickly.

This is very interesting, I like seeing pictures of hooves. I will start another thread as don't want to hi jack this one. I would be interested to see what folks think of some hooves. Also I have a question about dry hard weather conditions.

I am curious - does anyone know if it makes much difference to a horses hoof being trimmed after weeks and weeks of dry weather, ie, hard fields? Do they become brittle? Do they seem easier or harder to trim? Is it a good thing to do, or be avoided and better suited to less extreme weather conditions? Reason I ask is ours are both due trims soon and I was a bit mithered about the dry weather - I think this is one of the longest times it's been like this. It hasn't coincided with them needing doing before.

@Trewsers Belles hooves just get really, really hard in the dry weather, her frogs do too, farrier says it’s much harder to trim when it’s been dry for ages, just because they get so hard, hers don’t go brittle though.
I’ve never really worried about getting her done in the dry weather though and she’s never had a problem.

Harder to trim. But i dont think it makes too much difference to the foot outcome. If your stabling then there should be some ply in the feet as the muck keeps them moister.
Im basing this on foot trimming the sheep. I certainly prefer doing them when they are soft. My hands suffer badly when i have 12 to do with rock solid feet.

Belles do this in the dry weather, she’s not ridden much so it doesn’t get worn off like it used to, I’ll try and get a photo to show you.

Thanks that will be interesting. I expect it to be something that would have been mentioned on the Barefoot pages, or the farrier pages, but nothing.

She's got one piece on the other foot, but a peeve of that just broke off. Even with regular trimming she's always broken that piece off.

I would have said they become hard a s possibly dry out?
Though I suspect because yours are stabled or on the yard, you are likely okay
I was surprised that mine didn't need much off.

She has a touch of thrush.
I will opt for my usual treatment, unless anyone of you know of any wonder product that's out there these days.

I find mine get harder but not brittle @Trewsers, if you have access to a little stream or somewhere you can make a puddle your farrier will probably really appreciate you standing them in it for 5 minutes the day before he comes.

Mine get the hard white line when it’s dry, especially the little boys who normally rarely go on any hard surface. They probably don’t have any at the minute as we walk the 100m up the road to the new field each day so will have worn it off.

Red horse field paste is really good, especially if she’s not keen to hold feet up too often at the moment as it stays in the foot for up to a week.

That's my usual go to. Great minds think alike.
I love their stuff.

I found this piece right in Storm's doorway. Farrier due in the morning, so will ask her too. Just curious as I don't recall it happening before, but it looks like a flake of hoof? They are more than ready for doing I think, it's been a while.
Any thoughts? Should I be worried?

I wouldn't be no because they shed the frog and sole.
Mine is busy doing the odd scuff as she's walking, as she still have three pieces that haven't broken off yet.
(she's broken off other places just not there yet.

How odd. I picked Zi's feet out just now before going for a walk with him. What a lot of peeling. Yikes. Hope it's nothing terrible going on with them both. But in a way I'm sort of relieved because Storm's were first - earlier today and now Zi's.
I really am glad she's due in the morning. I have questions! Could be the weather here, it's been very hot for us and exceptionally dry. We've really only had the odd heavy shower. Hmm.
