Hi,

Does anyone know the top amount of vitamin A a horse can manage in a day, without becoming overloaded and toxic?

I can't find any recommended daily amounts on the web.

I'm asking because Seth has formula for feet at twice the daily dose for a standard 500kg horse, as he's a big lad!!!

I am now introducing Baileys no 14 Lo-cal Balancer, and am worried that he will be recieving too much vitamin A???

Any help greatfully recieved;)

Hi - this is from p23 'Practical Horse and Pony Nutrition' Gillian McCarthy (JA Allen & Co 1998)

Vit A is a fat-soluble vitamin ie stored in fat deposits in the body; the author suggests that a grass-kept horse should have enough stored to see it through from 'spring to xmas' in the UK.
She states a requirement of up to 50,000iu ( international units) but gives no weight/size comparison, merely categorizes as 'horses' or 'ponies' !

Hope that helps!
