Has anyone had a really good western/ranch holiday in the USA that they can recommend? I'm thinking of going next year and just wondered if anyone can give tips/help/advice. By the way, I am 53 years old and a fair experienced rider with 2 horses, and I ride western on one of them.

Sorry, can't help but, maybe if you posted in the General section, it would get more replies.

Hi Doris. I would highly recommend Schively Ranch, Montana. Lovely responsive horses. Suitable for beginners to experienced. Gorgeous food, its family based people. They r all friendly and I enjoyed it thoroughly plus it didn't break the bank!! Check out their website: www.schivelyranch.com

if you want anymore details, I wrote a document for my family describing thre whoel thing so can send that to you. It will give u a better idea.

western holiday

i'm not sure where you are looking to go (east coast, west coast or midwest) but i've heard the White Stallion Ranch (www.wsranch.com) in Arizona is excellent (just happened to see special on it last night that jarred my memory). you might also want to go on www.duderanches.com (i think that's what it is). hope this helps, have a great vacation (holiday:) )...

UK companies

Doris,

did you check out the UK travel companies that specialise in this ? They advertise in the magazines - I think one is called Ranch America and there is at least one more.

You might not end up choosing to use them, but it is useful research so you can be sure what kind of holiday you want - lessons, working ranch etc etc

Also if you can find a copy of an american horse magazine anywhere, they have a lot of ads in.

This does not get the personal 'recommendation' you asked for, but you may want something different to me !

I did a holiday about 10 years ago where I was lucky enough to spend a week with Lynn Palm in Michegan, and then I spent a week in Arizona. Lynn Palm is a top trainer so I felt very priviledged - a friend who breeds Quarter Horse in the Uk arranged it. The week in Arizona was much more low key (and warmer - it was in Feb so Michegan was snowy !).

Don't forget to think about the time of the year and location. The guys in Arizona told me they shut down in May 'cos it was just too hot !
