All these colour threads are fascinating!!
And as we have a resident expert in @chev, may I ask about Zak-Dude.....

Hmmmm id say sabino in there as well although the larger white patches and not just belly splashes are misleading.

Gotta love a roan though, does he get very light in winter??

He's black tobiano and sabino. Some black's fade out so much they actually look bay. The white on him is sabino except for the patches on his neck\shoulders and bum are down to the tobiano.

Thanks @chev
On googling those colours it seems they are associated with 'Paints' but what is the English version? Is Paint the same as Appaloosa? If not, what breeds are Paint?

So he's not roan at all then?

Paints are stock horses like the QH, they are a breed not a colour as are appys, QH folks often simplify it that paints are QH with too much colour to be registered (old rules were any colour above the knee/hock or not on face prevented registration) but paint folks get very upset at that. Appys are quite different with different conformational traits and the markings are different too, spotted rather than splashes or floods of colour.
I believe the tobiano or sabino are universal talking about a specific genetic thingy that effects colour, its just paint breeders are more concerned with these as solid paints are undesirable, paints are specifically bred for colour generally so reference to these specifics are more common.
Jess's mum is paint x tb and dad is QH but she can only be reg as solid part bred paint which excludes her from some comps etc, if she had colour it would be different.

He's only appy if he's bred from an appy, just like only a tb can come from a tb, you get spotted cobs etc but that doesnt make them appy, though its a common misunderstanding :)

He does have Appy characteristics - the mottling round his muzzle and the sclera round his eyes. But the Appaloosas have nowhere near that much hair - mane, tail and feather. He would also have stripy feet and not so chunky.

Appaloosas have their own set of genetics really. First is the LP gene (Leopold complex). Also kown as one gene responsible for varnish roan. If this isn't present nor will any patterns show. Varnish roans gradually lose their colour in patches leaving colour on the bony parts like the hips face and legs.

Then there's PATN1. This gene is responsible for leopard and fewspot patterns and how those markings are expressed is down to how many LP alleles are present.

Finally there's PATN2. Again it depends on how many varnish (LP) alleles are present. One and you'll get a blanket, two and you'll get a snowcap.

Zac isn't an Appy but there's something spotty in his background.

Another interesting thing with Appys is that a number of horses carrying the LP gene also have a problem with their sight (can't remember the proper name but it's like night blindness). They also run a test to verify that an Appy truly is an Appy!

.

Couldn't he be Appy crossed with something hairy and chunky? Or do Appy genes always win out, no matter how many other breeds are mixed in.

I love his colouring. He has a white tail with 1 black section and a black mane with 1 white section! Very funky.
