I'm going to buy myself a trailer and have seen a copule of suitable ones advertised but can't decide which one to go for. I'll be transporting a 17hh horse.

Option 1) Richardson Rice Supreme Ultra
Option 2) Ifor Williams 510

If anyone has either of these models can you tell me what's good about them and what's not?

Thanks

Well i owned an ifor 505 but have used a 510.

I love ifors, look the part, do the job and keep their values well.

510s are very spacious but have travelled a friend's 17.2 in a 505 very comfortably! But he was a good loader.

I could manhandle my ifor myself (at 5ft1) they are lightweight. Easy to hitch up and spare parts are easily and readily available.

Middle partitions can be removed where required, nice interior lights, rings for haynets. Nice secure fastenings to keep jockey door closed and ramps up. All in all - lovely trailers!

Sorry haven't got any experience of the other trailers! (The Rices)

With Ifors, you either love them or hate them. I love :D

i always just found it rattley:(

Doesn't sound good

Maybe it was the flaps that go over the top of the ramps that weren't being held securely next to the trailer? Catches might have been misaligned or not tight enough? Only thing i can think of that would rattle! :)

I dont know about the "Supreme Ultra" model, but I have a Richardson Rice that we bought from eBay for £1100.
It is a lovely, sturdy trailer. My mare is not a good traveller as she loses her balance when facing forwards (fine in a 6-horse Oakley Supreme which unfortunately we can't afford! ) but she loads beautifully so I don't think that's anything to do with the trailer.

We tow 2 15.1hh cobs with no problems, and in the front part there is a large water container, poo skip and broom. It originally had Coir matting but we replaced that with rubber (except for the front ramp).

Most expert people I have spoken to actually prefer the Rice but have the IW's because they are more modern and popular so easier to sell on!

Are you buying new or second hand? :)

i have an ifor williams and would reccomend the 510 - i have the 505 and sometimes i wish it was slightly roomier.

looking at second hand prices they dont seem to depreciate either which is good. my only snag would be that the front ramp comes down roadside instead of pavement side.

bateson trailers i think are slightly better

That's why we bought a Richardson instead - OH worried that if we ever had to unload in an emergency the horses would be straight into the road

We had the Supreme Ultra and our 17hh and 16.3 boys travelled fine in it, only sold it to buy a lorry.

I've got a lovely Ifor 510, its 4 months old and has been used once, to take my horse to the vets

Have towed others tho and it does tow very well, altho is noisier than previous trailer (sluis stinger) but that is probably because it is alot heavier. You need a big powerful 4x4 to tow, i've got a cherokee jeep (2.5 diesel) but would prefer something bigger.

It is very solid and sturdy and there is plenty of room for my 17h middleweight, the only downside is the fact that the front ramp is on the right and it makes the turn too sharp as he travels on the right - he is too long!!

Just to put OP's mind at rest should you ever have to unload your horses in an emergency you would need to have the road/lanes closed by the police :)

Ifors for me are the winner simply because they are much lighter and easier to sell on :D
