Yup. He's got some hard-core frog shedding going on by the look of it!
Thanks, I didn't even know this was a thing until today! My trimmer is out next week but until then I'll keep on with the Milton daily and then pack it with field paste once that arrives too.
Yep, perfectly normal shedding of the frog, if it wants to come off all well and good but don't force it, they tend to hang on for a little while so that the new frog underneath has time to develop. Once it does come off he could be a little tender for a day or two, which again is normal, it just takes a minute for the new frog underneath to toughen off a bit.
It's such a huge relief you all think it's that instead of thrush! Although I think there is some thrush in one of them so I'll keep cleaning them until next week when my trimmer is here.
The thrush is likely to develop under the old frog as there's a gap for it to get into, but that's not to say that's not by design to help with the shedding process, keeping them clean won't hurt though.
Apologies, your reply was very helpful and I've got the red horse stuff on order. Very reassuring to hear it clears up once the ground dries up, however long that will be!
Sorry something happened and i got booted off and then couldnt log in for a bit.. Was going to say after today i have noticed the same is happening again. Noticed the start of it. Also forgot to tell u prev post that standing them on hard standing for as long as possible each day helps too and with mine i had to cut feather from the back to let the air get to the area

Thank-you everyone you were all correct. He's having a dramatic shed. No thrush in there so that's a relief. He's been a little funny picking up his off fore for the last week and a bit so I had assumed the frog was causing him some bother and have been paying more attention to that foot.
However he's actually had a rather large abscess go in at the toe and burst out of the coronet band!! I had no idea. I see ale twice a day and there was no lameness, no excessive heat, raised pulses or anything unless I missed it? Couldn't see the exit due to all the mud but I hose his legs off for the trimmer. He's also had a much smaller one burst on his other front. What a shock. I must be a bad mother for not noticing. Will be keeping a close eye on him and hopefully they won't return.

Honestly, Pete gets a few abscesses a year (he used to get a lot more) & I never know until after the event. I've usually ended up riding & never noticed.
My barefoot trimmer explained that barefoot horses tend to suffer less as the foot can move more and they often don't get the pain assiciated with abscesses that shod horses do.

Totally agree with @Pete's Mum . Mouse has had a number of abcesses but the only one that ever made him lame was one he had when he had shoes on!
That's great that there is no thrush Jess doesn't always go lame or have any other symptoms with abscesses either, so I often don't know about them until I see the exit hole.
