My Shetland pony has a strange habit. During the winter I give him some chop in a bucket. Quite often he will roll whilst keeping his head in the bucket. Occasionally he will try to continue eating while he is rolling. His mate, a 12.1 native pony doesn't do this. It looks really funny but also weird. Does anyone else have a pony or horse that does this?

We have a Shetland that does exactly the same at our yard it is so funny when he does it but weird to lol

Thanks for all your replies. What a relief now I know that other Shetlands do it. I did wonder sometimes if he had mental health issues ;). About not putting feed in a bucket... I often consider chucking the chop & carrots on the ground because when he does the roll any feed that is in the bucket ends up on the ground! Hey oh.

I used to have a coloured youngster that used to do this too! I'd never seen one do it until she did it (also whilst I was holding her!). She didn't do it if she had her bucket in the stable but always did it when fed in the field. Strange!

My Connemara dos this when she licks my other mares bucket out... I think it's excitement as she's managed to get her bucket! :D
