Any recommendations for a really good proofing product please? He has 2 rain rugs for any long nasty spells of rain, neither are waterproof!

A few of my friends by Fabsil at outdoor shops and paint it on, it's designed for tents but also works very well on rugs. Do it somewhere well ventilated, and it does need some time to dry.

I’ve been using this for several years

I always used a paint brush to apply but last year put it in a spray bottle, covered the rug then worked it into the fabric with a brush. It works really well.

Top tip though, don’t spray the rug on your kitchen floor, the floor will be slick as ice for weeks after from the tiny bit of overspray 😬
