This is an extremely interesting thread. I have seen young horses started in dressage and to my mind, it seems that the ones doing well and not forced are being ridden by the better, more sympathetic rider. Quite often you see a fairly successful partnership (competition wise) where the picture is horrible - forced into outline, spurred on and held together.
I think sometimes people think they are better riders than they are and can ruin young horses.
