What is the most effective calmer you have used and would you reccomend it?

(it must be legal though for competing)

Any one tried the new blue chip one?

hi,

my horse was really needing a calmer - especially for a show that was coming up. so, my friends mum suggested St hippolyts - its not advertised as they want to be "exclusive", they tend to have stands at all the main events...however, although its is 100%herbal products, there is something in there that will show up on a performance enhancing test. so, useless for you but..back to my long winded story;)

the st H didnt arrive in time so i had to put him on Naf magic - it was great, (its only now i am on st H that i have realised this as st H is rubbish:rolleyes: ) anyways...he attacks fences like a race horse as he was jumped bsja too young, too fast but on the magic it was like jumping donkey - it was great, i had so much control. now i am on St H which claims its sooo great when really its not (maybe it is for some).

i plan to see the rest of the St H out (i have increased the dosage) but if it doesnt work then will go back to the magic.

it really depends on the horse and they are all magnesium based so a more "magnesium" product - mag ox?? could be a good start.

i was talking to the local feed guy about calmers and he said that they were a rip off when you compare horses in germany/holland who's owners have greater access to pure magnesium.

ETA - i increased the dosage of magic 3days before the show and he didnt even need is 30min "calm down, warm up session)

Thanks for that advice:) :) :)

We really need it for our new pony for shows:eek: lol so will try upping the dosage before shows like you did:)

Settleze is very effective, calms them right down and keeps them cool all day. Used on the stallions at the RS I go to, works wonders :) Taking the calmer one off it now, as its helped us keep him nice and quiet to train and now he understands the "rules" so to speak he doesnt need it so much anymore :)

NAF Magic is fantastic. I upped the dose to move my mare 400 miles. It was the only thing that kept her sane down south. just helped her stay rational and keep a lid on things.

i have to say though, i don't seem to need it here in scotland, not sure if it is because she is more settled or because the grass nutrient level is perhaps totally different. still, i haven't taken her showing yet!!!

Just to add, I'm currently trying Top Spec Calmer and I wouldn't recommend it - well it's had no effect on my mare anyway!

I am currently trying the Magic calmer but havn't seen a noticable effect yet. However I am taking him to a show on sunday so will see if it makes any difference!

Nupafeed is worth every penny, takes a bit of juggling to get the balance right but they do a booster oral syringe too, when you need a little more than the maintenance dose, and they're very helpful on the phone. Naf Magic didn't work for us.

Ours does if another pony leaves the lorry lol:)

Morning

He does to, he travelled with a companion to a clinic on sunday and they were fine together but once the other horse unloaded he starts to pace, its like box walking but in the trailer! Have you found any remedies?
On sunday I was thinking of tying up a radio in the trailer so he thinks someone is in there with him, what do you think?

hi, a radio could work - or it could be too noisey. i would keep the radio on outside his stable for a few days and see if that makes a difference that way. like i said to zoe, bump up the dosage (i.e. if you are giving 1scoop in AM feed then also give 1scoop in PM feed) 3days before the show and you should see a noticable difference!

Hi Amz

I am going to double dose as recommended on the tub, didnt think about doing it in each feed though was going to put it all in the morning one is that wrong? His stable neighbour has a radio and he doesnt seem bothered when thats on so it may help or he may pay no attention!

Hi,

I use Stresscare now called SuperCalm manufactured by Global Herbs.
When i first bought my horse he was very excitable, if he objected to something his first reaction was to have buck / bronking session, and when he bucks his back feet are way up over my head almost vertically which was becoming dangerous, he's 16.1h and i'm 5'6 my weight is just under 7 stone, so quite a light weight really and it takes some strength to keep me up on board. I had a good friend who suggested that i try stresscare. Wow... what a difference it made, he was so chilled out it was unbelievable, he'd just nod off anywhere, and man did he yawn, he became a much nicer horse and i could actually ride him, even ride out and have a canter and no bucking or bronking just happy and chilled, i eventually dropped it out out of his feed afer a few months as he had really calmed down. Due to various problems with him and me, we've both had a fair time off riding and on bringing him back into work he was all wired up again and very excitable, bucking around again like a rodeo, so i purchased a tub of Stresscare, its worked before so i may as well start with something i know and its done the trick yet again... it really is fantastic stuff :)
I've just been onto Global Herbs to place an order and they've explained its been renamed SuperCalm as they've added some new ingredients and its been working a lot better than the Stresscare did, so i've bought a tub to try and see how it goes, if this works the same or better i'm going to start bulk buying as its much cheaper. Here's hoping it works :)
I'll post once i've put it to the test, i know how hard it is to find something that works for you, hopefully it may help.

I've seen lots of ads for the new Blue Chip Kalmer liquid but i don't know anyone who has tried it
