ok ...at the risk of sounding dumb.....whats the difference between a dartmoor hill pony and a dartmoor pony? What is the largest they grow to? What are they like re as weight carriers and as childrens ponies? Can you get them in skewbald/piebald? what is the average price of a dartmoor hill yearling?

Hiya, I live on the edge of dartmoor and ride on it so see lots of ponies:p

Generally the hill ponies are shorter and stockier than a true dartmoor due to the introduction of shetland blood, however depending on the area you do get taller finer examples, although not true dartmoors.

This is an example of the shorter more shetlandy type..

Having known some they can make great childrens ponies although they can be strong but more than make up for this by having excellent natures.
I reckon most could easily take a light weight adult without a struggle;)

Here is an example of the finer type...

This particular herd have a cream stallion and come in all sorts of colours inc. appaloosa. The only colour i haven't seen in a hill pony is roan:p

Thanks for all the advice. what sort of price would you expect a yearling filly to be?

the finer type...think dartmoor pony standard type but skewbald.

Am I being thick here? I was sure that purebred Dartmoors could only be solid colours, anything piebald/skewbald must be a part bred.

tally is a Dartmoor moor pony, farmers take in ponies to graze the land & if they breed they sell the foals on, we think tally is welsh x Dartmoor:D

Oh Fizz!!! She is just LUSH, especially with that gorgeous winter coat.....

i know, i miss her lots.

was actually saying to mark earlier about seeing if they ever put her up for sale if we can buy her back:D

A Dartmoor Hill pony - Never heard of it & I've been breeding and showing Dartmoors for years!

They are a great kids pony and all my kids start on them

I thought a Dartmoor Hill pony was the general pony in the hills, not pure anything, but of a type and of hardy nature.

Dartmoor ponies are generally highly bred and pedigreed, by studs who show and they never see the hills or moorland.

they are, there are all types of natives out on the hills & are left to breed while they graze with the farmers stock, some farmers put them together by height i was told, the foals get rounded up & sold on at markets, sadly a lot of them go for meat which is what would of happened to tally if the person i got her from had not got her:eek:

Hi I've just found a link that gives quite a clear descriptions of the different types of ponies :)

Fizz - yeh its really sad that lots of the ponies go for meat:( A few years ago they reached a record low in price with some going for as little as 50p each:(
