I have tried this a couple of times in my lessons - but despite following the RI's instructions i am finding it really hard. I know you have to use your seat and body but i'm struggling. The best i get is canter to trot.

Any tips?:)

Canter to halt is a fairly advanced movement which requires a well schooled and balanced horse.

I don't usually work on direct downward transitions until horse and rider can work in all paces in collection and correct direct upwards transitions and such movements as simple changes (canter-walk-canter) are firmly established.

To be honest it is far too easy if done incorrectly to encourage the horse to hollow.

Canter to halt - easy peasy

Take me and my pony ask for canter she says no I don't want to do this - buck buck buck - horse does canter to halt as rider (me) does an amazing flying leap through the air. Pony looks at rider and says "What you doing down there mum?" Rider says "****" gets up and gets back on.

Maybe that wasn't the answer you were looking for but it works for me every time. Try it and see.;)

It takes alot of time to not only train a rider to do a canter halt, but also a horse lol. It isn't something that happens over night.

I don't know what kind of rider you are, but I can give you a very simple soultion. Transitions. Lots of them. Canter for about 5 strides then walk for 5, then trot for 3, then walk for 4, then etc... get the point. Nevr let him just go around. Keep him thinking, keep him and you on the aids at all times. You will be SHOCKED as to how sensitive your horse gets.

---IMPORTANT NOTE--- Ask your trainer to watch you do this. You might not be ready, and you could really hurt your horse.

i suggest you practice canter - trot then canter - walk trans before you go for the canter - halt as you dont want to just hall on his mouth to get the halt try for couple steps of trot then canter and same again with the walk steps until he is balanced enough to do canter - halt. you do canter - walk trans in elementry dressage.

I haven't read the other replies, so sorry if I repeat. Heals right down, calf muscles stretched, tail bone placed on the saddle with a deep seat. Brace yourself a bit with your heels, but make sure to keep your upper torso relaxed, then a strong half halt (Not harsh!) and a virbal queue. That's how to do it on a well trained horse.
