How long does it take you to muck out?

And what bedding/ method do you use? At work they use shavings and they are all on deep litter (poos removed and dry bedding flicked onto banks, wet floor leveled out, banks all turned over and spread across the floor, edge of bed dug away from walls, banks rebuilt and floor evened out)

It takes me about 25 minutes to do a big box, 20 mins for a pony box

The boss says I am slow, but I really don't think im that bad. The two other girls take about 15 mins a box, but one of them does a rubbish job. I've tried speeding up, but im just not happy with the results

So im just wondering really how long it takes you to muck out? :confused::)
 
For me would say depends on the horse and how mucky they are?
Vol and Odin are both on Bedmax - deep littered. Voltan can take me 10 mins as hes clean and literally poos at the back of his stable in a line and doesn't mess them up yet Odin will take double that time as he hides his poo's and tramples them in lol
 
RS ponies/horses are on enough shavings on mats to absorb wet. 36 stables take 2 hours for one person to muck out, water. New shavings and sweeping yard about another 45 minutes.

SFS horses are on full shavings/paper mix beds on mats and take her 10 minutes each to do fully to a very high standard including water.

I would be worried at the time you are taking for a deep litter box, maybe ok for full clean. If taking this long why are you deep littering?
 
I'm generally faster when it comes to straw beds because I deep litter on straw, just take the poos out, rebuild the banks and flatten over, sweep up. I do straw beds with rubber gloves aswell so makes the job much faster.

When it comes to shavings, I do a full muck out everyday, take the whole bed up, and shake every single little bit of poo out, otherwise it frustrates me IMMENSELY. :D And then pull it back down, build the banks, flatten the bed to an olympic (if there was a gold medal in shavings beds... i'd be a contender :p) standard, and then sweep it up, in a ridiculously neat and tidy straight line.

After i've swept the floor, god forbid any hay falls out of my haynet as I'm tying it up. :D

ETA: So, really, I didn't even answer your questions haha. Straw beds, about 5 minutes, 15 if it's a full take up. Shavings, anything up to half hour really. Average about 15 minutes.

Any tips for speeding up then? This time does include un rugging ponio, picking out feet, washing food bowl, water, preparing haylage etc.

I'm actually quicker at doing a full muck out, only take me 20mins to do my shares big box :confused:
 
One horse full bed lift about ten mins.

Kia is easy on straw it would take me three times that with a shavings bed he was minging!!!

Takes me about 35 minutes to change rugs, turn out, muck out(deep littered straw), prep feeds, do haynets and water for my 2.

ETA if a friend is at the yard helping it somehow manages to take about 2 hours lol

mucking out slow or fast???????

Hi sorry but 25mins to muck a stable even at that size is far too long, it takes me 10mins at the most to muck a stable out and that on shaving bed which i muck out all wet and poos everyday and i turn the banks over everyday also and about 5mins to do a straw bed.
How long have u been working with horses??? i've done it for nearly 13 yrs now so i've had lots of practise you will get faster as you do more and get use to it, people don't understand the differents between being fit and being mucking out fit!!!!!!!!!!
The way i see it is that the faster you muck out the quicker you will get done its a job that has to been done so the faster the better leaves more time for the jobs you enjoy doing like exerciseing the horses and grooming them.

How do you all muck out deep litter? are you just taking out the poos and tidying up? or do you go through the whole process of scraping all the clean bedding off the top and flicking it onto banks, pulling banks over the bed, rebuilding banks etc etc?

Dont matter how long it takes if you o a bed a certain way and its done properly then it doenst matter how long it take!!!

Don't worry, I take ages :p I do a full muck out every day on EasiBed (was the same on shavings) and it takes me forever :o Well somewhere between half hour and an hour I think :rolleyes: I've always been known for being slow at mucking out BUT in my defense I think I've been unlucky with 2 very dirty horses who take delight in mixing everything in etc etc

Don't worry too much as long it's not seriously affecting your work :) Life's too short to worry about the little things
 
I finish the same time as the other girls, but only because I start early and work through my tea break to catch up. I think I would rather do that and take my time mucking out than rush it and do a bad job. Maybe I will get faster with more practise (ive only been working with horses for a couple of months) or maybe im just too fussy about it :confused:
 
about 10 minutes on shavings:
sweep out hay
pick up poo (and I mean every bit of it)
dig out wet and into banks
re-lay and sweep up/do water

OMG!! thankgod im not the only one! I am VERY fussy with my beds, especially shavings..they have to be perfect...yes the horse will only muck them up again...but it makes them look good!! When I do a shavings med i take the poo out first, then chuck the sides up, turning the banks taking out any left of poo and wet, then bring back down, bank up and flatten out.......I do the same with straw....I personally cannot stand deep litter...mainly because my horse is sooooo mucky and deep littering him would mean you would hear the wet underneath.....it has to come out every day! He is on straw, poo comes out, then same routine as shavings!! I find shavings alot easier to much out but straw i find quicker....I used to do 8 stables in 3 hours so thats prob about 20 mins per box.....to a very high standard also.
 
As I only have my 2 to do I take my time!! I don't deep litter and usually takes 20 mins somtimes even 30mins if they need clean bedding!! :eek: but then I don't have a time limit anymore so often i'll do one horse then have a fag!! Both my horses are on shavings I take out the poo, chuck all the bedding up, take out the wet, sweep, pull it down, and do my banks and i'm another one whos abit OCD about bits of poo!! :rolleyes: When I worked at a dealers yard it used to take 15mins to deep litter straw and I was considered abit slow!! used to take out poo, chuck up bedding to base and take out any red bedding in the base before putting back down.. Then when I was doing my working pupil placement it was 20mins max each box to muck out fully on dust extracted chopped up straw (rhapsody) because that was all the time allowed but I think if you are not so anal about every single bit of poo or how level your banks are then this is plenty of time..
 
20 minutes to do 7 in 4 boxes sharing.

We have rubber mats and paper shreds to soak up the pee.

eml, I once worked on a yard that drove me crazy as the mucking out would still be being done at 9 pm at night. It was one thing that I could NEVER get them to get a move on with. It is one of my many, many hates, mucking out that cannot be done efficiently and quickly.
